I have a kinky fetish for Father Christmas - and I'm not the only one turned by Santa ClausGandhinagar (Gujarat) [India], December 25 (ANI): On the occasion of Good Governance Day, Gujarat's Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Wednesday, launched several innovative initiatives focused on leveraging technology to enhance citizen-centric schemes and public services. Gujarat CM mentioned that the true essence of good governance lies in providing the maximum possible support to even the most ordinary individuals in the state. According to the Gujarat CMO, these initiatives include the Government Performance Index, Scholarship Monitoring System, Revenue Monitoring System, CM Fellowship Website, Swar (a speech-to-text platform), and the modernization of the Gujarat India Portal. The Government Performance Index facilitates the evaluation of state-level citizen-centric schemes, services, projects, and grievance redressal mechanisms across various departments. Key performance parameters have been established to ensure effective monitoring, with departments ranked based on a comprehensive assessment of their performance. To efficiently track and manage the scholarships provided by various state government departments for youth education, a dedicated Scholarship Monitoring System has been integrated into the CM Dashboard. A separate "Revenue Dashboard" has been developed and launched by the Chief Minister to monitor various portals under the Revenue Department, including iORA, Khedut Kharai, Sudhara Hukam, eDhara, City Survey, iMojani, Collector Portal, and case management systems. The CM Fellowship Website has been launched to promote the CM Fellowship Program and encourage youth to engage with good governance initiatives. This platform enhances awareness and facilitates participation in the program. Leveraging Bhashini, an AI-based app developed by the Government of India to promote regional languages, the CMO introduced the "Swar" platform. This platform allows citizens to submit applications or representations through speech. Its speech-to-text feature, integrated with the "Write to CMO" section of the Chief Minister's Office website, was inaugurated by the Chief Minister. The modernized Gujarat India Portal, launched by the Chief Minister, provides single-window access to accurate and comprehensive information about state government services and initiatives, catering to citizens and other stakeholders. While inaugurating these initiatives, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel remarked that true good governance can only be achieved by remaining committed to the welfare of the people and working with genuine intent. He encouraged citizens to provide feedback to enhance these initiatives further and reaffirmed the government's strong commitment to citizen-centric governance. The Chief Minister also urged officers and staff to continuously evaluate their responsibilities and contribute with excellence to enhance the state government's prestige. He highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's approach as an example of how one person can bring transformative and impactful changes in governance. Earlier on Good Governance Day 2023, the Chief Minister's Office and the Wadhwani Institute signed a two-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to improve data-driven governance, data quality, and the implementation of standardized protocols on dashboards and other platforms. The chief minister was also presented with a report detailing the progress made during the first year of this collaboration. Secretary to the Chief Minister, Avantika Singh stated that technology plays a pivotal role in enhancing transparency and delivering swift public solutions. Inspired by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel's vision, this approach aims to strengthen citizen engagement and improve grievance redressal mechanisms. She assured that the CMO staff remains committed to making technology-driven governance more dynamic through the newly launched initiatives. On this occasion, Chief Secretary Raj Kumar, Advisor to the Chief Minister SS Rathore, Additional Chief Secretaries to the Chief Minister Pankaj Joshi, MK Das, and other senior officers and CMO staff were present. Since 2014, inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, December 25, the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, has been observed nationwide as Good Governance Day. Trump's TikTok love raises stakes in battle over app's fate
Lawmakers are concerned about background checks of Trump's Cabinet picks as red flags surfaceFederally indicted Mayor Eric Adams playfully compared himself to Hunter Biden on Tuesday, crowing that the president’s controversial pardon of his son proves the Department of Justice has become politicized. Like a political prop comic, Adams pulled a copy of the New York Times from his lectern during his weekly off-topic news conference to land his not-so-joking point. The Gray Lady’s front page included a line that President Biden and President-elect Donald Trump now both agree the “ Biden Justice Department has been politicized .” “Does that sound familiar?” Adams facetiously asked reporters. “I rest my case.” A clearly emboldened Adams then launched into a boastful rant about his unprecedented criminal case’s supposed unfairness — and his lawyers’ directive to stay silent while the federal court process unfolds. Adams, who has pleaded not guilty, compared himself to Muhammad Ali’s classic “Esquire” cover depicting the boxer stuck with arrows. “I’m just a fighter,” he said. “I believe in fighting for my rights. And this is the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my entire life, the onslaught of this,” Adams continued. “And I have to remain silent and I can’t answer and defend myself. That’s the hardest thing.” Federal prosecutors contend Adams took bribes in the form of luxury travel perks and defrauded taxpayers out of $10 million in campaign matching funds. Many in Adams’ camp believe the election of Trump, who has vocally opined that the prosecution is political persecution for the mayor speaking out on migrants, will be a boon for his defense and help resurrect his floundering political career.China's Xi to lead Macau handover anniversary celebrationsGandhinagar (Gujarat) [India], December 25 (ANI): Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel distributed appointment letters to over 800 young recruits in the state forest department on Wednesday, Good Governance Day, celebrating the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a press release said. The CM noted that Atal Bihari Vajpayee's governance was centred on the welfare of the poor and common citizens. He emphasized the importance of a skilled workforce in realizing PM Modi's saturation approach, which seeks to extend the benefits of good governance to marginalized communities. The Chief Minister pointed out that the government has adopted transparent, time-bound recruitment processes to channel the youth's skills and potential into public service. He stressed that leveraging the demographic dividend of youth is crucial for driving the state's development. CM Patel also urged the newly appointed youth in the state's Forest Force to actively contribute to both the state's development and the conservation of the environment. He conveyed the belief that these recruits would serve the welfare of nature and humanity, supporting the vision of Viksit Gujarat for Viksit Bharat @2047. The Chief Minister also hoped that their contributions would take Gujarat's development model to new global heights. Forest Minister Mulubhai Bera said that Good Governance Day is being observed across the nation, including in Gujarat, in tribute to Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He mentioned that the then Chief Minister and current PM Narendra Modi shaped Gujarat's unique identity through good governance, a legacy that is being strongly carried forward by CM Patel. The Forest Minister emphasized that Good Governance Day is being genuinely celebrated today with the recruitment of a large number of new Forest Guards in the Forest Department. He conveyed that the new generation, empowered with knowledge of science and technology, will play a crucial role in the conservation of forests and wildlife. Mulubhai Bera also wished the newly appointed Karma Yogis great success in their roles. Bera further noted that rescue and treatment centres have been established in Morbi, Jambughoda, Kutch, Jamnagar, and Dwarka to manage human-wildlife conflicts. He also highlighted the initiation of safari arrangements at Barda and Amberdi for lion sightings and informed that scientific methods are being employed to track and count various species, including lions, leopards, bears, and birds. The Forest Minister mentioned that trees are being planted under agroforestry programs to enhance farmers' income. In 2023-24, approximately 20 to 25 urban forests were established in urban areas. Minister of State Mukesh Patel said that good governance is characterized by effective administration and transparent functioning. With the issuance of appointment letters to forest guards, he emphasised their responsibility to protect forests, prevent illegal poaching, and work in harmony with local families. He also urged the nation to actively participate in 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' Abhiyan, initiated by PM Modi, to encourage tree planting and strengthen the connection with nature. On Good Governance Day, the Chief Minister and other dignitaries released three books: "Seva, Sankalp and Sushasan Na 2 Varsh," "Best Practices of Forest," and "Atlas of Indian Wolf Habitats in Gujarat." A documentary showcasing the role of forest rangers in forest and wildlife conservation was also presented. The event was attended by Gandhinagar Mayor Miraben Patel, Gandhinagar North MLA Ritaben Patel, Chief Secretary Raj Kumar, Additional Chief Secretaries Pankaj Joshi and M.K. Das, General Administration Department Additional Chief Secretary Kamal Dayani, Forest and Environment Department Principal Secretary Sanjeev Kumar, Forest Department Head Nityanand Srivastava, senior Forest Department officials, newly appointed Karmayogis, and their families. Blake Lively’s brother-in-law has publicly voiced his support for the actress following her allegations of sexual harassment against It Ends With Us director and co-star Justin Baldoni. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1700472799616-0'); }); In a comment on The New York Times Instagram post about Lively’s complaint, Johnson, 54, emphasized that her concerns were documented early during production. "Her complaints were filed during the filming. On record. Long before the public conflict," wrote Johnson, who is married to Lively’s half-sister, Robyn Lively. "The cast unfollowed him for a reason. Read this article before spiting [sic] ignorance." Bart Johnson's Instagram comment Johnson also criticized Baldoni’s alleged public relations tactics, saying, "His PR team was stellar. Gross and disgusting but highly effective. Read the article, their text message exchanges, and his PR campaign strategy to bury her by any means necessary. No one is without faults. But the public got played." Lively’s complaint, obtained by People , alleges that Baldoni’s behavior created a hostile work environment, causing her “grief, fear, trauma, and extreme anxiety.” It further claims Baldoni retaliated by orchestrating a smear campaign to damage her reputation. The filing describes a meeting attended by producers and Lively’s husband, Ryan Reynolds, to address Baldoni’s alleged actions, which had reportedly disrupted production. While Lively stated that Sony Pictures and Wayfarer Studios approved her requests to address the issues, she claims Baldoni launched a “social manipulation” campaign afterward, with screenshots of alleged texts and emails included as evidence. In additional comments on Instagram, Johnson defended Lively against online criticism and referenced the immense pressure she faced. “Just IMAGINE being a stay-at-home mom raising 4 kids, married to the busiest man in Hollywood, running multiple companies, working 16+ hour days, and launching businesses while being attacked by a VERY expensive PR smear campaign,” he wrote. “Looks like she’s doing a hell of a job to me.” He also addressed resurfaced interviews of Lively that have circulated online, saying, “None of us have ever been wrong or mean. Never. We should discount decades of good for those few bad moments. Glad the microscope isn’t on me every day of my life.” Lively’s complaint has sparked widespread attention, highlighting ongoing concerns about workplace behavior and accountability in Hollywood. { "@context": "https://schema.org", "@type": "VideoObject", "mainEntityOfPage":"https://www.thenews.com.pk/latest/1264656-blake-livelys-brother-in-law-steps-in-justin-baldoni-drama-slams-public", "name": "Blake Lively's brother-in-law steps in Justin Baldoni drama, slams ‘public’", "duration":"", "datePublished": "2024-12-24T01:55:00+05:00", "dateModified": "2024-12-24T01:55:00+05:00", "keywords":"", "headline":"Blake Lively's brother-in-law steps in Justin Baldoni drama, slams ‘public’", "interactionCount": "", "thumbnail": { "@type": "ImageObject", "url": "https://www.thenews.com.pk/assets/uploads/updates/2024-12-24/l_1264656_014909_updates.jpg", "height": 390, "width": 700 }, "description": "Bart Johnson has all the reasons to side with her sister-in-law, Blake Lively.Blake Lively’s brother-in-law has publicly voiced his support for the actress following her allegations of sexual...", "thumbnailUrl": "https://www.thenews.com.pk/assets/uploads/updates/2024-12-24/l_1264656_014909_updates.jpg", "uploadDate": "2024-12-24T01:55:00+05:00", "contentUrl": "https://players.brightcove.net/6415714528001/a8C5JINxB_default/index.html?videoId=6366368731112" }
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — The Trump transition team said it can begin submitting names of officials and nominees for background checks and security clearances after it signed an agreement with the Justice Department. The FBI plays a key role in the transition from one administration to the next, conducting background checks and processing security clearances for intended nominees and the transition officials, known as landing teams, who go into agencies before the inauguration to get ready. "Ultimately, this will afford the transition process additional insights, and it facilitates our agency landing teams gaining access to the information they need to prepare for leadership of the federal agencies and departments," the transition team said in a statement. The transition team missed an Oct. 1 deadline to sign an agreement with the White House to provide for landing teams to begin meeting with departments and agencies. It ultimately signed that agreement on Nov. 26. But team members need security clearances to gain access to classified information. The delays in signing the memoranda of understanding had raised concerns that the Trump team would bypass FBI background checks that have long been a requirement for Senate confirmations. President-elect Donald Trump hasn't been shy about his distrust of the Justice Department and the FBI. He's already announced his pick for FBI director , indicating he plans to fire the current head. The transition team opted against signing a third agreement with the General Services Administration (GSA) that would provide funding, office space and technology. That agreement would have required an ethics agreement. Instead, the Trump team said it would use "an existing ethics plan" for its team, and agreed to post it on the GSA website .

The Daniel Jones era with the New York Giants is over. After he was benched earlier this week, the veteran quarterback requested his release from the team, which was happy to grant it . Once he passes through waivers (and given his contract, he will), he will become a free agent and can sign with any team in the NFL. Even though his time with the Giants was mostly a failure, he is still an NFL-caliber quarterback who will get a chance as a backup. Perhaps some team will think he can be the next reclamation project to pan out with a fresh start. Here are a few teams that might fit as potential landing spots. Dallas Cowboys With Dak Prescott out for the season, the Cowboys are stuck with Cooper Rush and Trey Lance as their quarterbacks for the remainder of the season, and it is not going well. Jones could at least give them another option to consider while creating the potential comedy of him getting an opportunity to play against the Giants on Thanksgiving (though it would seem unlikely even if he did sign there). The practical benefit could be that Dallas might be eligible for a compensatory draft pick if Jones were to leave in free agency after the season. Cleveland Browns On Friday, long-time Browns insider Tony Grossi tried to argue that Jones could be an option for the team next season. . @TonyGrossi thinks that Daniel Jones could be a viable option for the Browns next season pic.twitter.com/SLmLxZclDf Some NFL teams are stuck in quarterback purgatory. The Browns are stuck in quarterback hell, given Deshaun Watson's remaining contract. Even though Watson seems to be a lock for next year's team, they will need another option behind him if Jameis Winston leaves in free agency. Las Vegas Raiders The Raiders seemed poised to take a quarterback early in the 2025 NFL Draft, as neither Aidan O'Connell nor Gardner Minshew is a long-term answer. Assuming that happens, having a capable veteran on the roster would be beneficial, and Jones could be a low-risk signing. Los Angeles Chargers The Chargers are set at quarterback for the present and future, with Justin Herbert and first-year head coach Jim Harbaugh helping him reach an entirely new production level and efficiency. However, there are some concerns behind him, such as Easton Stick and Taylor Heinicke being the backups. Jones is almost certainly better than both of them and has the mobility and athleticism to at least somewhat duplicate some of Herbert's skills if he were to be called upon. Miami Dolphins The Dolphins have neglected their backup quarterback position for too long under head coach Mike McDaniel, and that can not continue given Tua Tagovailoa's concussion history. Given his mobility, Jones might also be an intriguing fit in that offense. They can not afford to lose more games because Skylar Thompson is their top backup option. It’s been a busy year in cybersecurity, but it’s not over yet. This week, we revealed how hackers figured out how to “jailbreak” digital license plates —which are legally issued in at least a couple of states and are valid across the US—allowing them to change the license plate number to basically anything. That means someone with this capability can avoid tolls and tickets, or even change their plate to be the same as their enemy. While the company that makes the plates, Reviver, makes clear that doing this would be both illegal and a terms-of-service violation, we’re guessing that the people who want to hide their car’s credentials so they can speed all over town aren’t too concerned about that. Staff at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency are preparing for an uncertain future . Several CISA employees told WIRED that they’re afraid the incoming Trump administration will scrap key programs that they say are keeping Americans safe from cyberattacks and other threats—or that the agency itself could be dismantled. In recent years, financial scams that involve bilking people out of their cryptocurrency holdings have come to be known by an eye-catching, catch-all name: “ pig butchering .” But it’s time for a rebrand, according to officials at Interpol . The term, which is a translation from Chinese and refers to the slow process of fattening up a pig before slaughtering it, was likely created by the scammers themselves. As such, its use could further degrade victims of these scams or shame them into not reporting a crime. Doing crimes in public is, apparently, all the rage. We took a deep dive into the world of drug dealers who are advertising their goods on open web platforms like Instagram, X, and Snapchat. The practice isn’t new, but authorities in Europe say it’s growing more popular. And that’s not all. Each week, we round up the security and privacy news we didn’t cover in depth ourselves. FAA Bans Drones Over Parts of NJ and NY but “Has Not Identified Anything Anomalous” The US Federal Aviation Administration said on Thursday that it was temporarily banning drone flights over dozens of critical infrastructure and utility sites in New Jersey and New York “at the request of federal security partners.” The restrictions are set to last 30 days. The announcement comes as panic over reported mysterious drone sightings in the two states has surged in recent weeks. The FAA said in a joint statement with the US Department of Homeland Security, Department of Defense, and FBI on Wednesday that the US government has not found evidence of malicious or unexplained aircraft. "Having closely examined the technical data and tips from concerned citizens, we assess that the sightings to date include a combination of lawful commercial drones, hobbyist drones, and law enforcement drones, as well as manned fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and stars mistakenly reported as drones,” the agencies wrote. "We have not identified anything anomalous and do not assess the activity to date to present a national security or public safety risk over the civilian airspace in New Jersey or other states in the northeast.” The agencies said that the FBI has received more than 5,000 tips about reported drone sightings in recent weeks that have generated about 100 leads investigated by local, state, and federal officials. None have proved to be problematic or concerning. The mass hysteria is itself creating dangerous conditions, though. The FAA warned on Wednesday that there has been a significant uptick in people pointing lasers at aircraft, which is illegal because it can be dangerous and distracting for pilots. Google U-Turn Allows Creepy “Fingerprint” Tracking Next Year Back in 2019, Google made its position on the online tracking method called fingerprinting pretty clear. “Unlike cookies, users cannot clear their fingerprint, and therefore cannot control how their information is collected,” the company said in a blog post . “We think this subverts user choice and is wrong.” That viewpoint appears to have changed. This week, Google announced that, starting in February 2025, advertisers would be allowed to use fingerprinting . The method is largely hidden and allows online activity to be tracked by building up a profile using characteristics from your device —for instance, your phone type, language settings, timezone, can be combined with other information unique to your setup and identify you. Google indicated the change in new advertising policies, which will go into force next year. The current version of the policy says fingerprinting is not allowed, while that reference has been scrubbed from the new version . The change drew instant criticism, with the UK’s data regulator, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), saying that “fingerprinting is not a fair means of tracking users online” and it called the U-turn “irresponsible.” The ICO said it is talking to Google about the shift. LockBit Teases Potential Comeback as Alleged Developer Faces US Extradition Early this year, the notorious Lockbit ransomware group was thoroughly dismantled by a law enforcement operation , called Operation Cronos. The group’s website was taken over, details of its members and their cyberattacks extracted, decryption tools released, and its alleged Russian mastermind identified . Now, the US government is attempting to extradite Rostislav Panev, an Israeli citizen who it suggested worked as a LockBit developer between 2019 and 2024. According to Ynet news , Panev was arrested in August and it is alleged that he received more than $230,000 in Bitcoin and developed ransomware tools from the gang. According to a complaint unsealed by US officials , Panev said he was regularly paid $10,000 per month for software development. Panev’s lawyers deny the claims. At the same time, the organizers of the LockBit ransomware claim that they have created a new “4.0” version of their tools and will be “launching” them in February. A post on LockBit’s reincarnated dark-web sites urged potential hackers to sign up. As with many cybercrime groups, LockBit has lied about its activities in the past, and following the humiliation of its disruption, many other cybercriminals may not trust its tattered brand. One of America’s Most Popular Router Manufacturers May Be Banned Chinese technology company and router maker TP-Link could be banned in the US, a report from The Wall Street Journal this week claimed . Officials at the Defense, Commerce, and Justice departments have launched investigations into the company over potential cybersecurity and national security concerns around its routers. The Commerce Department has reportedly subpoenaed TP-Link, which has more than 60 percent of the US retail market for routers. A ban could reportedly happen next year. While TP-Link is a Chinese company, its products are sold in the US by a separate California-based business. In October, Microsoft said that TP-Link routers “make up most” of a network of compromised devices that it has detected being used in Chinese hacking campaigns. The news of the potential ban follows the previous bans of Huawei and ZTE equipment and comes as TikTok will challenge its ban before the US Supreme Court in early January.

The DS Pixel Keyboard is a new keyboard on that doubles as both a touchscreen and a monitor. writes that the creators of the DS Pixel Keyboard also claim to have found a solution to make typing on a touchscreen more satisfying: The DS Pixel has a removable frame with an electrostatic capacitive keycap that will act as physical keys if placed on top of the touchscreen. The keyboard otherwise consists of a 60Hz touchscreen with an image resolution of 3840 x 1100 pixels. The DS Pixel Keyboard also has an HDMI input, which means it can be used as a completely separate monitor. The 20,000mAh battery should last for 12 hours of use and should be fully charged in three hours. The keyboard also has a pair of built-in stereo speakers. With a month to go, the Kickstarter campaign for the DS Pixel Keyboard has already reached its funding goal more than ten times over. The plan is for the keyboard to start shipping in February 2025, with a starting price of $349 for a keyboard with a reading frequency of 1000Hz. There is also a variant for gamers for $419 with a readout frequency of 8,000Hz. This article originally appeared on our sister publication and was translated and localized from Swedish. Lucknow: When police resort to firing, they use private weapons to evade detection in investigations that follow, claimed Leader of Opposition in the UP Assembly, Mata Prasad Pandey , in reference to the death of four youngsters in Sambhal violence and the police action that followed. "I know for a fact that policemen keep a private weapon with them and use it when they have to open fire. This is because using the govt weapon will result in detection as police firearm bore and bullets are easily identifiable," Pandey said responding to media queries on police statements that the four youth who died during Sambhal violence did not die of police firing. "Police have quite a few kattas (country-made pistols) and seized weapons in the strongroom of their police stations and these firearms can easily be used for such purposes," he said. Pandey who was scheduled to visit trouble-torn Sambhal on Tuesday to take stock of the ground situation deferred his tour for three days on the state DGP's assurance of a fair investigation into the violent incidents and subsequent police action within the next three days. He said his party will review the situation after three days and chalk out a strategy accordingly. At least five persons died of gunshot wounds in the violence that erupted on Nov 24 over the survey of Sambhal's Jama Masjid by a court-appointed lawyers' commission. There's a chance that the San Francisco 49ers will be without their starting quarterback on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers. According to ESPN's Nick Wagoner, Brock Purdy was not present during the early portion of Friday's practice. He wasn't in uniform. Head coach Kyle Shanahan will update his status once the session ends. Purdy is dealing with a right shoulder injury which has kept him from fully practicing this week. He even went for an MRI this week to make sure that the injury wasn't worse than it was believed to be. Ezra Shaw/Getty Images The 49ers hope that he'll be able to play since Sunday's game against the Packers is so massive but if he can't go, Brandon Allen would start. Purdy has enjoyed a solid third season in the league, completing 66% of his passes for 2,613 yards through the air, 13 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. The 49ers are in the thick of the NFC playoff race and are only a game out of first in the NFC West. They have been ravaged by injuries all season long and this one to Purdy only adds to the list. Sunday's game is one they need to have to keep pace in the NFC since they are 5-5 through their first 10 games. They're coming off a last-second loss to the Seattle Seahawks when they were going for the season sweep. Had they won, they'd be tied for first in their division alongside the Cardinals. Kickoff for this Sunday's game against the Packers will be at 4:25 p.m. ET on FOX. Related: 49ers General Manager Had 2-Word Response When Asked About Brock Purdy's Injury

Set to turn 17 next week, the star forward with the Western Hockey League’s Medicine Hat Tigers headlines the country’s 25-player roster for the annual tournament announced Friday. McKenna, who is projected as the potential top pick at the 2026 NHL draft, will be joined by a pair of fellow youngsters battling for the No. 1 selection spot in June — 18-year-old winger Porter Martone and 17-year-old defenceman Matthew Schaefer. Five of seven eligible returnees from last year’s squad that finished a disappointing fifth in Sweden are back, with forwards Easton Cowan, Brayden Yager and Carson Rehkopf getting the nod, while defencemen Oliver Bonk and Tanner Molendyk will anchor the blue line. The two players unable to hold onto their spots for the event set to run Dec. 26 to Jan. 5 in Ottawa are forward Matthew Wood and goaltender Scott Ratzlaff. Making up the rest of the group up front are Bradly Nadeau, Jett Luchanko, Luca Pinelli, Berkly Catton, Ethan Gauthier, Calum Ritchie, Tanner Howe, Cole Beaudoin and Mathieu Cataford. Nadeau didn’t attend selection camp in Ottawa this week, but was guaranteed a spot after being made available by the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes from their American Hockey League affiliate. Canada’s defence corps also includes Andrew Gibson, Sam Dickinson, Caden Price, Sawyer Mynio and Beau Akey. The hockey powerhouse’s three-headed crease contingent is made up of goaltenders Jack Ivankovic — another 17-year-old eligible for June’s NHL draft — Carter George and Carson Bjarnason. “We believe we have assembled a competitive and talented roster that will give us the best opportunity to win a gold medal on home ice,” Hockey Canada’s Peter Anholt, who leads the under-20 program’s management group, said in a statement. “We look forward to them wearing the Maple Leaf with pride.” The Canadians, who will be looking to add to a record 20 gold medals at the annual showcase, were ousted in last year’s quarterfinals thanks to a last-minute loss to Czechia. Among the other notable cuts Friday were Calgary Flames defence prospect Zayne Parekh and Beckett Sennecke, who was selected No. 3 overall by the Anaheim Ducks at the 2024 draft. Both players were late injury additions for selection camp and are eligible to try out again next year. Canada will now hold training camp in Petawawa, Ont., before pre-tournament games against Switzerland, Sweden and Czechia. The hosts open Group A at the Canadian Tire Centre, home of the NHL’s Ottawa Senators, on Boxing Day against Finland. The defending champions United States, Latvia and Germany make up the rest of the field. Group B at TD Place, home of the Ontario Hockey League’s Ottawa 67’s, includes Sweden, Czechia, Slovakia, Switzerland and Kazakhstan. Russia remains banned by the International Ice Hockey Federation due to that country’s ongoing war in Ukraine. Ottawa last hosted the world juniors in 2009 when Canada defeated Sweden to secure a record-tying fifth straight gold. Cameron, who guided the country atop the podium in 2022 after winning silver in 2011, was an assistant coach on the staff of the late Pat Quinn at that tournament 15 years ago in the nation’s capital. “This group of 25 players is excited for the opportunity to wear the Maple Leaf in front of Canadian fans in Ottawa, and to represent their country in our quest to win a gold medal,” he said in a statement. “This is a great accomplishment for these players and their families. “We know they will enjoy the world juniors experience while bringing the competitiveness needed for us to be successful and accomplish our goal.” This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 13, 2024. Advertisement AdvertisementA 7-year-old rivalry between tech leaders Elon Musk and Sam Altman over who should run OpenAI and prevent an artificial intelligence "dictatorship" is now heading to a federal judge as Musk seeks to halt the ChatGPT maker's ongoing shift into a for-profit company. Musk, an early OpenAI investor and board member, sued the artificial intelligence company earlier this year alleging it had betrayed its founding aims as a nonprofit research lab benefiting the public good rather than pursuing profits. Musk has since escalated the dispute, adding new claims and asking for a court order that would stop OpenAI’s plans to convert itself into a for-profit business more fully. The world's richest man, whose companies include Tesla, SpaceX and social media platform X, last year started his own rival AI company, xAI. Musk says it faces unfair competition from OpenAI and its close business partner Microsoft, which has supplied the huge computing resources needed to build AI systems such as ChatGPT. “OpenAI and Microsoft together exploiting Musk’s donations so they can build a for-profit monopoly, one now specifically targeting xAI, is just too much,” says Musk's filing that alleges the companies are violating the terms of Musk’s foundational contributions to the charity. OpenAI is filing a response Friday opposing Musk’s requested order, saying it would cripple OpenAI’s business and mission to the advantage of Musk and his own AI company. A hearing is set for January before U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in Oakland. At the heart of the dispute is a 2017 internal power struggle at the fledgling startup that led to Altman becoming OpenAI's CEO. Musk also sought to be CEO and in an email outlined a plan where he would “unequivocally have initial control of the company” but said that would be temporary. He grew frustrated after two other OpenAI co-founders said he would hold too much power as a major shareholder and chief executive if the startup succeeded in its goal to achieve better-than-human AI known as artificial general intelligence , or AGI. Musk has long voiced concerns about how advanced forms of AI could threaten humanity. “The current structure provides you with a path where you end up with unilateral absolute control over the AGI," said a 2017 email to Musk from co-founders Ilya Sutskever and Greg Brockman. “You stated that you don't want to control the final AGI, but during this negotiation, you've shown to us that absolute control is extremely important to you.” In the same email, titled “Honest Thoughts,” Sutskever and Brockman also voiced concerns about Altman's desire to be CEO and whether he was motivated by “political goals.” Altman eventually succeeded in becoming CEO, and has remained so except for a period last year when he was fired and then reinstated days later after the board that ousted him was replaced. OpenAI published the messages Friday in a blog post meant to show its side of the story, particularly Musk's early support for the idea of making OpenAI a for-profit business so it could raise money for the hardware and computer power that AI needs. It was Musk, through his wealth manager Jared Birchall, who first registered “Open Artificial Technologies Technologies, Inc.”, a public benefit corporation, in September 2017. Then came the “Honest Thoughts” email that Musk described as the “final straw.” “Either go do something on your own or continue with OpenAI as a nonprofit,” Musk wrote back. OpenAI said Musk later proposed merging the startup into Tesla before resigning as the co-chair of OpenAI's board in early 2018. Musk didn't immediately respond to emailed requests for comment sent to his companies Friday. Asked about his frayed relationship with Musk at a New York Times conference last week, Altman said he felt “tremendously sad” but also characterized Musk’s legal fight as one about business competition. “He’s a competitor and we’re doing well,” Altman said. He also said at the conference that he is “not that worried” about the Tesla CEO’s influence with President-elect Donald Trump. OpenAI said Friday that Altman plans to make a $1 million personal donation to Trump’s inauguration fund, joining a number of tech companies and executives who are working to improve their relationships with the incoming administration. —————————— The Associated Press and OpenAI have a licensing and technology agreement allowing OpenAI access to part of the AP’s text archives.
AKD and ETCA with India: Trap or opportunity?Mr Carter, a former peanut farmer, served one term in the White House between 1977 and 1981, taking over in the wake of the Watergate scandal and the end of the Vietnam War. After his defeat by Ronald Reagan, he spent his post-presidency years as a global humanitarian, winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. His death on Sunday was announced by his family and came more than a year after he decided to enter hospice care. He was the longest-lived US president. His son, Chip Carter, said: “My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights and unselfish love. “My brothers, sister and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs. “The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honouring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs.” Mr Carter is expected to receive a state funeral featuring public observances in Atlanta and Washington DC before being buried in his home town of Plains, Georgia. A moderate democrat born in Plains in October 1924, Mr Carter’s political career took him from the Georgia state senate to the state governorship and finally the White House, where he took office as the 39th president. His presidency saw economic disruption amid volatile oil prices, along with social tensions at home and challenges abroad including the Iranian revolution that sparked a 444-day hostage crisis at the US embassy in Tehran. But he also brokered the Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel, which led to a peace treaty between the two countries in 1979. After his defeat in the 1980 presidential election, he worked for more than four decades leading the Carter Centre, which he and his late wife Rosalynn co-founded in 1982 to “wage peace, fight disease, and build hope”. Mrs Carter, who died last year aged 96, had played a more active role in her husband’s presidency than previous first ladies, with Mr Carter saying she had been “my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished”. Earlier this year, on his 100th birthday, Mr Carter received a private congratulatory message from the King, expressing admiration for his life of public service.Senior congressional correspondent Chad Pergram reports the latest from Capitol Hill. A top Team Trump official disclosed the moment that "really set the campaign on a trajectory to victory" – the day President-elect Donald Trump arrived in Columbiana County, Ohio, to survey the East Palestine train derailment. "The ripples from that day do not get enough attention," White House communications director-designate Steven Cheung said on X, formerly Twitter, in retweeting an op-ed making that assertion. In February 2023, a Norfolk-Southern train hauling caustic industrial chemicals – including vinyl chloride – derailed in a small community near the Pennsylvania border, causing immediate chaos and long-lasting, widespread damage to the region. A controlled burn held shortly after the derailment released toxic phosgene into the air. JD Vance, R-Ohio, hosted Trump at the site, where the former and future president highlighted Americans "forgotten" by President Joe Biden – who had not yet shown up and would not visit for several more months. The Republican mogul handed out "Trump"-branded water and met with local officials. Meanwhile, officials in both Ohio and Pennsylvania were also visibly working to hold the railroad accountable. In his tweet, Cheung was responding to an op-ed by Pittsburgh-based Washington Examiner writer Selina Zito, who covered the crisis at the time. Zito wrote that Trump’s arrival had happened at a political nadir for the Republican, following the 2022 midterm losses and amid a then-close presidential primary race with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. She noted in a tweet that it was Vance – his future running mate – who brought him to the site. Trump’s mantra of "you are not forgotten" to Rust Belt residents too often forgotten by Washington helped change minds in the area, Zito wrote, quoting a local resident who said she had "switched parties because of the way he spoke directly to the concerns." "I have voted for him both times since then," the woman, who owns an East Palestine farm, said. (Jabin Botsford/The Washington Post via Getty) Trump told residents that day that "in too many cases, your goodness and perseverance were met with indifference and betrayal." The disparity between Trump’s eagerness to "show up" and Biden’s apparent putting-off of a visit to East Palestine helped turn the tide in the Republican’s favor, the column continued. "100%," Cheung wrote in his tweet. Trump’s former running mate, Mike Pence, also called out Biden at the time, saying he was "AWOL" and remarking to Fox News that the Delaware Democrat’s policies had "derailed the economy of East Palestine long before that train came through." On the Pennsylvania side of the line, both Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro and his then-former gubernatorial opponent, state Sen. Doug Mastriano, R-Gettysburg, also responded quickly to the derailment. CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP Shapiro lodged a criminal referral at the time, and Mastriano led hearings that hosted affected residents along the Ohio border wherein Norfolk-Southern CEO Alan Shaw notably no-showed. "It is very disheartening to hear that these alleged delays and botched response approaches took place – especially since those in East Palestine, Ohio, and areas in my district here in Pennsylvania have been dealing with the aftermath of this derailment for over a year now," state Sen. Elder Vogel Jr. told Fox News Digital at the time, after a whistleblower had spoken out about alleged mistakes from Biden’s EPA response – which the agency disputed. Fiery plane crash kills 179 in South Korea
Hyderabad: Three individuals have been arrested on Sunday, November 24 for allegedly kidnapping a one-year-old boy from Niloufer Children’s Hospital in Hyderabad. Baby Sauqlain was safely returned to the caregivers. The accused have been identified as Shaheen Begum, 28, Reshma, 30, and Abdulla, 35. According to the complaint, a 27-year-old housewife from Zaheerabad, Haseena Begum gave birth to a baby boy on October 25. The infant was diagnosed with jaundice and was transferred to Niloufer Children’s Hospital for further treatment. On November 23, while Haseena and her mother were in the process of signing discharge papers, a woman in burkha approached them claiming to know everything about the hospital. As the woman distracted Haseena’s mother, the other accused abducted the baby and fled. Upon receiving information, police registered a case. Investigation revealed that Abdulla and his wife, Reshma, already parents to three daughters, were desperate for a male child. Fearing another girl, they hatched a plan to kidnap a male infant. Shaheen Begum, Reshma’s younger sister, was brought to Hyderabad to assist her during her pregnancy and joined the scheme. On November 23, Abdulla and Shaheen Begum visited Niloufer Hospital where Shaheen selected a mother with a baby boy leaving the hospital in Hyderabad. She distracted the mother and kidnapped the baby boy fleeing the scene with Abdulla who waited nearby. They quickly escaped in an autorickshaw. The Nampally police launched a full-scale investigation forming five teams to track the suspects. They examined CCTV footage from the hospital in Hyderabad and traced the suspect’s vehicle, which was seen heading towards Kurnool on National Highway 44. Based on this information, the police coordinated with local authorities, and a team was dispatched to the Kurnool highway. On November 24, a team from the Gadwal police station intercepted the accused’s vehicle at the Pullur Toll Plaza in Jogulamba Gadwal District. Subsequently, the accused were arrested and are currently in judicial custody. Further investigation is ongoing.Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter has died. FARGO, N.D. — For two teams coming off a holiday break, the Dakota Wesleyan University women’s basketball team gave North Dakota State University all it could handle on Sunday afternoon in a 64-55 loss at the Scheels Center. DWU scored six straight points over the heart of the fourth quarter, pulling to within 58-54 with 1:34 remaining before the Bison’s Molly Lenz hit a jumper with 1:06 left to put the game back at six points and keep the Tigers at bay. DWU went the final 6:55 of game time without a made field goal. ADVERTISEMENT The game was an exhibition contest for the Tigers, while NDSU was counting the contest toward its NCAA Division I record. It was the first matchup between the two teams since 2005, when NDSU won 104-42 in Fargo. DWU’s production on defense was what gave NDSU fits and kept the Tigers in the game. NDSU had 18 turnovers in the first half and finished with 26 turnovers, which led to 22 points for DWU in the game. In the first half, NDSU shot 57% from the field and led by 10 points at the break between the first and second quarter but could never fully pull away from DWU. The Tigers (10-3) had a 9-0 run late in the second quarter and took the lead on a Rylee Rosenquist 3-point play with 52 seconds left in the half for a 34-32 advantage. It would end up being DWU’s only lead of the day, and Lenz’s 3-pointer moments later put NDSU up 35-34 at halftime. The Tigers were led by 14 points from Emma Yost, while Avery Broughton had 13 points, five assists and four rebounds. Rylee Rosenquist had 13 points and Avery Orth had a strong game from off the bench, with eight points on 4-for-6 shooting. DWU was held to 35.8% shooting from the field, including 5-for-16 on 3-pointers. The Tigers were 12-for-16 on free throws. DWU was 2-for-11 shooting in the fourth quarter and 6-for-21 from the field in the second half. NDSU’s Abby Krzewinski scored 13 points to lead the home squad, while Avery Koenen had 12 points and Marisa Frost and Abbie Draper both scored 10 points for the Bison (8-5), who were playing a home game for the first time in 25 days. NDSU was in control on the glass, doubling up DWU 42-21 in rebounds and not allowing any second-chance points for the Tigers. The game was the final tune-up for NDSU before beginning Summit League play at the University of St. Thomas on Saturday, Jan. 4. The Bison were the preseason No. 3 pick in the Summit League. DWU will be back in action on Thursday, Jan. 2 at the Corn Palace, hosting Concordia University (Neb.) at 6 p.m. as part of a men-women doubleheader. A cereal switch-up is stirring up sweet — well, mostly salty — discussion. Post Consumer Brands confirmed to TODAY.com that it’s discontinuing its beloved Oreo O’s cereal and replacing it with something new: Oreo Puffs. It features chocolaty cereal puffs and mini marshmallows with the aim of creating a similar experience to dunking an Oreo cookie into a glass of milk. According to Post, Oreo Puffs are made with real Oreo cookie wafers — which are the cookies that sandwich the creme.. The new cereal will be available at retailers nationwide including Walmart and Target for an MSRP of $4.99. According to Post, Oreo Puffs are made with real Oreo cookie wafers — which are the cookies that sandwich the creme.. The new cereal will be available at retailers nationwide including Walmart and Target for an MSRP of $4.99. “With its introduction, OREO PUFFSTM cereal will replace OREO O’s® cereal on store shelves,” Post tells TODAY.com in an email. Oreo O’s was introduced to U.S. markets in 1997, stayed on shelves until 2007, and then was brought back in 2017 during a big wave of nostalgic marketing. And just like that ... it’s returned to the vault of cereals past. We’ll check back in about 10 years to see if it’s revived from its sugary slumber again. News of the swap has hit the crumb-filled corners of social media, with popular snack-spotting Instagram account Markie Devo posting about the new product and its predecessor. As usual, his comments section had thoughts. “They should’ve kept the rings but added marshmallows,” wrote one commenter. “Sooo coco puffs,” another said , referencing the General Mills-brand analog to the new cereal. “ya know some things just need to be left alone !!” wrote another, and one more added , “I’m tired of every cereal turning into puffs 😢.” Others were excited about the breakfast-basednews. “These sound amazing,” wrote one user, and another added , “Oh wow my kids would be all over this one!” “OREO Puffs Cereal is out now and will be REPLACING OREO O’s Cereal!” one more user wrote on a separate post about the cereal, adding they think the new cereal is an upgrade. “It’s disappointing whenever a beloved item becomes discontinued, but this is actually very exciting news for us because we believe marshmallows BELONG in OREO Cereal!” This story first appeared on TODAY.com . In a post to Instagram on Thursday the singer, 36, explained that he went to hospital after feeling “really unwell” and added that he needed “a lot more tests” to determine “what surgery I will need to get me back on my feet.” Updating his fans, George posted a video from his hospital bed on Friday, and said he “had a bit of a rough day”. He added: “My heart rate dropped a bit this morning, which was, it was a little bit scary. “But everyone here is amazing, so wanted to get it back up a little bit and get it stable again, which is great. “Reason I’m not... like a lot of friends and family are asking why I’m not just going in and having anything (like surgery) done yet, because there’s so many tests that need to be done before we do anything. “So I just need to get through till, I guess, next week. Get all the tests done, and then they’ll know exactly what to do, because otherwise, obviously, they’ll be able to do something, but it’ll be better doing it with all the information that they need. “But, yeah, it’s shit, but still here and staying positive. “And thanks everyone as well for all the lovely messages and any friends and family and that that have messaged that I haven’t got back to. “I see you all and yeah, means a lot. Much love and have a nice Friday night.” George rose to fame in the 2010s with The Wanted, who had a number of hit songs including All Time Low, Glad You Came and Heart Vacancy. His bandmate Tom Parker died in 2022 at the age of 33 after being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour. George, who helped carry Parker’s coffin at his funeral alongside fellow bandmates Siva Kaneswaran, Jay McGuiness and Nathan Sykes, previously said on This Morning that he continued to message his late bandmate following his death as it brought him “a bit of comfort”. He also appeared in the US musical series Glee as Clint and in his band’s reality series The Wanted Life. Over the years, he has competed in a number of competition series including Strictly Come Dancing in 2020, Bear Grylls: Mission Survive and Richard Osman’s House Of Games. George’s girlfriend is former EastEnders star Maisie Smith, who appeared on BBC One dancing competition series Strictly Come Dancing in 2020 at the same time as George, though they have previously said that romantic sparks only began to fly in 2022. He was due to appear on a MasterChef Christmas special before the BBC pulled the show from its festive schedule amid allegations about the conduct of judge Gregg Wallace across a range of shows.

BACK HOME The 13 Filipino surrogate mothers convicted of human trafficking in Cambodia arrive in Manila on Sunday morning, three days after a royal pardon. —Photo courtesy of the DOJ MANILA, Philippines — Filipino surrogate mothers convicted of human trafficking in Cambodia returned to Manila on Sunday, three days after they were pardoned by King Sihamoni. The Department of Justice (DOJ) said the 13 women, who brought along three babies, were turned over to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD). Social Welfare Secretary Rex Gatchalian said they would be provided “all forms of assistance.” The 13 were among the 20 Filipino women who were arrested in Kandal province in September for their involvement in surrogacy, which is illegal in Phnom Penh. They were found to be pregnant upon their arrest. The other seven, who were not pregnant, were not charged in court and instead sent back to the Philippines in October. On Dec. 2, a local court found the 13 women guilty of violating Cambodia’s laws on human trafficking and sexual exploitation. They were initially meted a prison sentence of 15 to 20 years. But the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (Iacat) led by the DOJ initiated a dialogue with Cambodia that led to the reduction of the women’s sentence to four years, with two years suspended. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) continued to intervene on the women’s behalf, which led to a royal pardon by King Sihamoni on Dec. 26. “The Philippine Government thanks the Royal Government of Cambodia, headed by Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Prime Minister Hun Manet, for the humanitarian treatment extended to the Filipino mothers throughout the investigative and judicial processes,” the DFA said in a statement on Sunday, adding that return home attested to the “long-standing friendly relations” between the Philippines and Cambodia. While the Philippine government has classified the 13 women as trafficking victims, there is no local law regulating or prohibiting surrogacy, creating a legal gray area that may lead to potential exploitation. Earlier this month, Iacat said the government was building cases to charge the recruiters responsible for trafficking the women. The Philippine Embassy in Cambodia said that, based on interviews, the victims were recruited online by an individual whose identity and nationality have yet to be determined. The 13 women also claimed they were unaware of the identities of their actual clients, as all transactions were handled through a third-party agency representative known only as “Ima.” Justice Undersecretary Nicholas Felix Ty, who heads Iacat, said in a previous interview that the women had voluntarily agreed to become surrogates. They were promised monthly aid during pregnancy and P500,000 each upon giving birth. Ty said that during the discussions with Cambodia about the babies, the Philippines also made known its position that the children would be considered Filipinos. “Under our law, it’s simple: the woman who gives birth to the child is the child’s mother, and her nationality will be followed,” he said. In 2016, Cambodia issued a ban on commercial surrogacy after neighboring Thailand pulled the plug on the trade the previous year, putting an abrupt end to a thriving industry for hopeful parents, many from Australia and the United States. But demand for commercial surrogacy remains high after China eased its one-child policy and agencies in Cambodia continue to offer the service. Valpo stuns Davidson: With just 8 seconds left, Davidson looked to have the game in the bag. The Wildcats led 17-10 and were lining up to punt, hoping to flip the field on Valparaiso and give the Beacons nothing more than a last-ditch heave at a win. Instead, Valparaiso blocked the punt. Davidson would fall on the loose ball but it set up the Beacons at the 17-yard line with 4 seconds to play. Caron Tyler hit Gary Givens in the back of the end zone with no time on the clock. The Beacons then converted the 2-point conversion for the win. The victory improved Valparaiso's record to 5-7 to close out the season. WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL VU pair honored: Two Valparaiso volleyball players were named to the Missouri Valley Conference All-Freshman Team on Saturday. Ava Helming and Jessica Pickett were selected as some of the conference's top freshmen. Helming ranked second on the Beacons in points and kills this fall. Picket tallied the third-most blocks in the conference for the Beacons. It's the first time since 2017 that Valparaiso placed two or more players on the MVC All-Freshman team.Shares of Formidable ETF ( NYSEARCA:FORH – Get Free Report ) traded down 0.3% during mid-day trading on Friday . Isaiah Wong is back in the NBA, this time with the Charlotte Hornets. Wong was signed Monday to a two-way contract. The Indiana Pacers draft pick had spent the season with the Utah Jazz’s G League affiliate. Wong has played one career NBA game, on April 1 for the Pacers, who chose him with the 55th overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. The Bonner & Prendergast grad and 2018 Daily Times Boys Basketball Player of the Year spent four seasons at the University of Miami. Wong, 23, has seven starts for the Salt Lake City Stars in the G League. He’s averaging 26.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.6 steals per game. He’s coming off a 41-point game on Nov. 20. Wong is shooting 47.2 percent from the field and 42.1 percent from 3-point range this season. The 6-3, 185-pound guard has played 52 G League games in his career, averaging 17.2 points per game. He’ll wear No. 21 for the Hornets. Injuries have hit the Hornets hard, with four of their six double-figures scorers this season on the shelf, many for much longer than just Tuesday’s visit from the 76ers. Forward Grant Williams is out of the season with a torn ACL. Leading scorer LaMelo Ball, who is averaging 31.1 points per game and hit the Sixers for 38 last month, is out for at least two weeks with a calf strain. Tre Mann’s back injury will keep him out on the order of weeks, and Miles Bridges is out Tuesday with a knee issue. The Hornets will need to find sources of offense for the foreseeable future, and Wong is a possible answer on that front.Batteries Plus Celebrates Record-Breaking Commercial Sales Month, Surpassing Major Milestones in Franchise and Systemwide Commercial Growth

The Prime Minister used an op-ed in the Mail on Sunday to vow to “get to grips” with the cost of welfare after figures suggested more than four million people will be claiming long-term sickness support by the end of the decade. Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall will announce a package of legislation next week designed to “get Britain working” amid Government concerns about the projected rise. Official forecasts published by her department this week show that the number of people claiming incapacity benefits is expected to climb from a pre-pandemic figure of around 2.5 million in 2019 to around 4.2 million in 2029. Last year there were just over three million claimants. The Prime Minister wrote: “In the coming months, Mail on Sunday readers will see even more sweeping changes. Because make no mistake, we will get to grips with the bulging benefits bill blighting our society. “Don’t get me wrong, we will crack down hard on anyone who tries to game the system, to tackle fraud so we can take cash straight from the banks of fraudsters. “There will be a zero-tolerance approach to these criminals. My pledge to Mail on Sunday readers is this: I will grip this problem once and for all.” Ms Kendall’s white paper is expected to include the placement of work coaches in mental health clinics and a “youth guarantee” aimed at ensuring those aged 18-21 are working or studying.Article content OTTAWA — Former cabinet minister Randy Boissonnault says he is trying to repair any damage he has done by making shifting statements about his connections to Indigenous heritage, as he faced more accusations on Thursday of trying to mislead Parliamentarians. The Edmonton MP testified before the parliamentary committee on Indigenous and Northern affairs on Thursday, the first time he has spoken publicly since leaving Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s cabinet last month amid growing calls for him to resign after it was revealed the company he co-owned had bid on federal contracts by declaring itself as fully Indigenous owned. Boissonnault, who was serving as employment minister, has said a former business partner was the one to have made that claim and did so without seeking his consent or having any knowledge of it happening. He apologized on Thursday for how he has described his family’s ties to Indigenous ancestry. He delivered his first apology in Edmonton weeks earlier. “It has been a difficult time to see our family’s history be challenged publicly and I recognize the ways in which I described my heritage have not always been as accurate as they could have been,” Boissonnault said. “I have never attempted to leverage my adopted family’s history for personal or political gain.” When he was first elected in 2015, Boissonnault called himself “non-status adopted Cree.” This fall, he clarified that his adoptive mother and brother were in fact Métis. Before leaving cabinet, Boissonnault’s former office also confirmed that his great-grandmother, whom he had repeatedly referred to in Parliament as being a “full-blooded Cree woman,” was in fact not, but that her family had Métis lineage. The committee heard that had been Boissonnault’s understanding of his family growing up until recently, and that it was during the COVID-19 pandemic that his adoptive mother and brother learned more about their history and became citizens with the Métis Nation of Alberta. “As someone adopted into an Indigenous family, I wanted to speak about that history in a way that was respectful and accurate. That is why I worked with an Indigenous researcher, and how I arrived at the term ‘non-status adopted Cree,'” he said in a prepared set of opening remarks. “This term ensured that I claimed no Indigenous status for myself, while also honouring the Indigenous heritage of the family who adopted and raised me.” During his testimony, Conservative MP Garnett Genuis challenged Boissonnault on how the researcher in question has since stated that he did not give Boissonnault that term, and asked if he wanted to correct his opening statement. The MP responded by saying he had been “very clear” during his initial remarks. “I said that I chose the term ‘non-status, adopted Cree’ after having the conversation,” said Boissonnault. “Frankly, that’s what we’ve come to expect from you,” Genuis replied. Boissonnault added he “came up with the term” to try to honour his family. Conservative MPs repeatedly pressed the representative on how he could be believed, with Michael Barrett, the party’s ethics critic, at one point questioning whether he was a journalist, as he stated he was when he first entered politics. “I was a regular reporter for the francophone news outlet, Radio-Canada,” Boissonnault said. Last summer, a report by Quebec newspaper Le Devoir raised questions about those claims. “You said one thing, and the exact opposite is true,” Barrett said. NDP MP Lori Idlout, who is Inuk, also questioned how Boissonnault was trying to make amends for any harm done to Indigenous people through his statement, at one point saying he had engaged in race-shifting. Pointing to his apologies, Boissonnault said that process was ongoing, and not only was he open to hearing her advice, but that he had been speaking with Indigenous elders and other leaders. “I have checked in with Indigenous leaders and elders about using Cree in my speeches,” he said. “Do they still want me to do that? Do they still think it’s appropriate? So I’m having these conversations. I think that’s part of my own learning journey here.” “I never intended to be unclear about my history or my family’s history, and I think that is an important personal act for me when it comes to reconciliation.” He added to Idlout: “And if I could, I would say thank you in your language, if that were appropriate, but I’d seek out your consent to do that first. So I will just say thank you. ” For years, Boissonnault would begin funding announcements and speeches in Parliament with a Cree greeting. He would also sometimes refer to himself as “Strong Eagle Man,” which he told Thursday’s committee was a name gifted to him by an elder in Edmonton in 2021 as part of a ceremony hosted by a society dedicated to serving two-spirit community members. “They said I gave voice to the voiceless, and that the reason they chose ‘Strong Eagle Man’ was because I would be flying back and forth to Ottawa after the election.” A notice to the community about that event also said it was to thank Boissonnault for helping it secure funding. Boissonnault told Thursday’s committee he was in he first steps towards launching legal action against Stephen Anderson, the former business partner whom he said was responsible for bidding on federals contract in June 2020 by billing their medical supplies company as wholly “Indigenous” and “Aboriginal-owned.” He said he stepped away from their company, Global Health Imports, which has since been named in different lawsuits, following his re-election to Parliament in September 2021 after losing the 2019 election. Boissonnault said the reason he had no knowledge of his former business partner’s June 2020 bids was because he was not involved in federal contracts, given his position as a member of Parliament, which meant he had to follow lobbying rules. A constant dollar basis assumes the average foreign currency exchange rates for the period remained constant with the average foreign currency exchange rates for the same period of the prior year. The Company provides constant dollar changes in its results to help investors understand the underlying growth rate of net revenue excluding the impact of changes in foreign currency exchange rates. Adjusted gross profit, gross margin, income from operations, operating margin, income tax expense, effective tax rates, net income, and diluted earnings per share exclude certain inventory provisions, asset impairments, and restructuring costs recognized in relation to lululemon Studio, and the related income tax effects of these items. The Company believes these adjusted financial measures are useful to investors as they provide supplemental information that enable evaluation of the underlying trend in its operating performance, and enable a comparison to its historical financial information. Further, due to the finite and discrete nature of these items, it does not consider them to be normal operating expenses that are necessary to run the business, or impairments or disposal gains that are expected to arise in the normal course of its operations. Management uses these adjusted financial measures and constant currency metrics internally when reviewing and assessing financial performance. The Company's fiscal year ends on the Sunday closest to January 31st of the following year, typically resulting in a 52-week year, but occasionally giving rise to an additional week, resulting in a 53-week year. Fiscal 2023 was a 52-week year while 2024 will be a 53-week year. The expected net revenue increase excluding the 53rd week excludes the expected net revenue for the 53rd week of 2024. This enables an evaluation of the expected year-over-year increase in net revenue based on 52 weeks in each year. The presentation of this financial information is not intended to be considered in isolation or as a substitute for, or with greater prominence to, the financial information prepared and presented in accordance with GAAP. New Orleans Police say 3 shot, 1 killed in French Quarter
Top 10 movies of 2024: In a time of scoundrels, ‘Brutalist,’ ‘Challengers’ and the movie about the exotic dancerWith Donald Trump’s return to the White House and Republicans taking full control of Congress in 2025, the Affordable Care Act’s Medicaid expansion is back on the chopping block. More than 3 million adults in nine states would be at immediate risk of losing their health coverage should the GOP reduce the extra federal Medicaid funding that’s enabled states to widen eligibility, according to KFF , a health information nonprofit that includes KFF Health News , and the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families . That’s because the states have trigger laws that would swiftly end their Medicaid expansions if federal funding falls. The states are Arizona, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Montana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Utah, and Virginia. The 2010 Affordable Care Act encouraged states to expand Medicaid programs to cover more low-income Americans who didn’t get health insurance through their jobs. Forty states and the District of Columbia agreed, extending health insurance since 2014 to an estimated 21 million people and helping drive the U.S. uninsured rate to record lows. In exchange, the federal government pays 90% of the cost to cover the expanded population. That’s far higher than the federal match for other Medicaid beneficiaries, which averages about 57% nationwide. Conservative policy groups, which generally have opposed the ACA, say the program costs too much and covers too many people. Democrats say the Medicaid expansion has saved lives and helped communities by widening coverage to people who could not afford private insurance. If Congress cuts federal funding, Medicaid expansion would be at risk in all states that have opted into it — even those without trigger laws — because state legislatures would be forced to make up the difference, said Renuka Tipirneni, an associate professor at the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health. Decisions to keep or roll back the expansion “would depend on the politics at the state level,” Tipirneni said. For instance, Michigan approved a trigger as part of its Medicaid expansion in 2013, when it was controlled by a Republican governor and legislature. Last year, with the government controlled by Democrats, the state eliminated its funding trigger. Six of the nine states with trigger laws — Arizona, Arkansas, Indiana, Montana, North Carolina, and Utah — went for Trump in the 2024 election. Most of the nine states’ triggers kick in if federal funding falls below the 90% threshold. Arizona’s trigger would eliminate its expansion if funding falls below 80%. Montana’s law rolls back expansion below 90% funding but allows it to continue if lawmakers identify additional funding. Under state law, Montana lawmakers must reauthorize its Medicaid expansion in 2025 or the expansion will end. Across the states with triggers, between 3.1 million and 3.7 million people would swiftly lose their coverage, researchers at KFF and the Georgetown center estimate. The difference depends on how states treat people who were added to Medicaid before the ACA expansion; they may continue to qualify even if the expansion ends. Three other states — Iowa, Idaho, and New Mexico— have laws that require their governments to mitigate the financial impact of losing federal Medicaid expansion funding but would not automatically end expansions. With those three states included, about 4.3 million Medicaid expansion enrollees would be at risk of losing coverage, according to KFF. The ACA allowed Medicaid expansions to adults with incomes up to 138% of the federal poverty level, or about $20,783 for an individual in 2024. Nearly a quarter of the 81 million people enrolled in Medicaid nationally are in the program due to expansions. “With a reduction in the expansion match rate, it is likely that all states would need to evaluate whether to continue expansion coverage because it would require a significant increase in state spending,” said Robin Rudowitz, vice president and director of the Program on Medicaid and the Uninsured at KFF. “If states drop coverage, it is likely that there would be an increase in the number of uninsured, and that would limit access to care across red and blue states that have adopted expansion.” States rarely cut eligibility for social programs such as Medicaid once it’s been granted. The triggers make it politically easier for state lawmakers to end Medicaid expansion because they would not have to take any new action to cut coverage, said Edwin Park, a research professor at the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families. To see the impact of trigger laws, consider what happened after the Supreme Court in 2022 struck down Roe v. Wade and, with it, the constitutional right to an abortion. Conservative lawmakers in 13 states had crafted trigger laws that would automatically implement bans in the event a national right to abortion were struck down. Those state laws resulted in restrictions taking effect immediately after the court ruling, or shortly thereafter. States adopted triggers as part of Medicaid expansion to win over lawmakers skeptical of putting state dollars on the hook for a federal program unpopular with most Republicans. It’s unclear what Trump and congressional Republicans will do with Medicaid after he takes office in January, but one indicator could be a recent recommendation from the Paragon Health Institute, a leading conservative policy organization led by former Trump health adviser Brian Blase. Paragon has proposed that starting in 2026 the federal government would phase down the 90% federal match for expansion until 2034, when it would reach parity with each state’s federal match for its traditional enrollees. Under that plan, states could still get ACA Medicaid expansion funding but restrict coverage to enrollees with incomes up to the federal poverty level. Currently, to receive expansion funding, states must offer coverage to everyone up to 138% of the poverty level. Daniel Derksen, director of the Center for Rural Health at the University of Arizona, said it’s unlikely Arizona would move to eliminate its trigger and make up for lost federal funds. “It would be a tough sell right now as it would put a big strain on the budget,” he said. Medicaid has been in the crosshairs of Republicans in Washington before. Republican congressional leaders in 2017 proposed legislation to cut federal expansion funding, a move that would have shifted billions in costs to states. That plan, part of a strategy to repeal Obamacare, ultimately failed. I try not to impose upon them the difference in their childhood to my childhood or my wife’s childhood,” Reynolds said. “We both grew up very working class, and I remember when they were very young, I used to say or think, like, ‘Oh, God, I would never have had a gift like this when I was a kid’ or ‘I never would’ve had this luxury of getting takeout.’ Then I realised that that’s not really their bag of rocks to carry. “They’re already very much in touch with gratitude and understanding the world enough to have a strong sense of empathy. Those are the things that I would think [would indicate] we’re doing an OK job — if our kids can empathise with other people and other kids,” he continued. “But yes, it’s different. When I was a kid, you would just suck it up, get out of the house and be back by sundown, which I just can’t even imagine now.” Ryan Reynolds has claimed that he and wife Blake Lively come from “working class’” backgrounds — but their property portfolio tells a very different story about their current lifestyle. (Picture: Instagram/Blake Lively) Reynolds, who found unfathomable success with Deadpool and in romantic comedies like The Proposal, is reportedly worth more than $300 million, partly because he has diversified his business interests to include other industries like vodka distribution and the ownership of a European football team. The Deadpool star was soon blasted for his “out-of-touch” statement, with critics calling attention to Lively’s upbringing, which many would consider to be very privileged. The “It Ends With Us” star grew up in the entertainment world and has been described by some as a “nepo baby.” Her father, Ernie Lively, an actor and director who died in 2021, reportedly cast her in his directorial project, “Sandman,” at the age of 10. Meanwhile, her mother, Elaine, was a talent scout. Her parents and siblings have all reportedly worked in the entertainment industry. While Lively was attending Burbank High School, her brother’s talent agent is said to have sent her on several auditions, through which she ultimately landed a role in the hit movie “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” at the age of 16. As for Reynolds, his upbringing in Canada appears to have been much more humble than his wife’s. His late father was a cop, and his mother worked in retail. These days, the successful showbiz couple boast an incredible shared fortune that is estimated to be worth upward of $350 million — and they have a swanky real estate portfolio to boot, having snapped up two dynamically different homes during their marriage: a country estate in Pound Ridge, New York, and a chic Tribeca loft in New York City. Serene surroundings The couple own a stunning property in upstate New York, where Reynolds is seen posing with his mother, Tammy. (Picture: Instagram/Blake Lively) When in need of country life away from the bustling city, the family can escape to their suburban home in Westchester County, about an hour’s drive from Manhattan. The upscale area is popular with celebrities: Susan Sarandon, Richard Gere, and Mike Myers have all lived here. It’s also not too far from Martha Stewart‘s 153-acre farm in Bedford, NY. Apparently, the domestic maven wasn’t impressed when introduced, calling the “Deadpool & Wolverine” star “not so funny” in real life. According to property records, the two picked up the Pound Ridge estate for $5.7 million (A$9.1m) in 2012 — the same year they married. Built in 1860, the seven-bedroom mansion offers 705.5 sqm of living space. The 12-acre parcel appears to have a converted barn on the premises, as well as stone walls, a stocked pond, and orchards. While no photos of the ultra-private property are available, a shot from Reynolds’ Instagram account with his mum gives a sense of the graphite exteriors of the charming property. Chic in the city They also own a picture-perfect apartment in Manhattan’s Tribeca neighbourhood. (Picture: Instagram/Blake Lively) The dwelling is located inside a paparazzi-proof building. (Picture: Realtor.com) When Reynolds and Lively want a date night, or head to events like the Met Gala, they can crash at their lavish pied-à-terre. It’s also where the “Gossip Girl” alum flaunts her fashion-forward wardrobe on Instagram, and from those pretty pics, we’ve gotten a peek of the rustic-cool spaces. According to multiple reports, the couple have a stylish condo in an haute Tribeca building. It’s a celebrity hot spot, as it’s been home to Justin Timberlake, Jennifer Lawrence, and Harry Styles, among others. Once a 19th-century book bindery, the building was converted into luxe residences with unique character. It now offers 53 loft-style homes and eight penthouses. Offering the “highest degree of service,” the building also provides on-site, 24/7 staff. Lively and Reynolds must love the history combined with the convenience of the paparazzi-proof building, where units cost anything from $6 million (A$9.6m) to $50 million (A$80m). We don’t know specifically which unit they picked, but they had an option of a variety of spaces, including a loft or penthouse. Units inside the apartment can cost anywhere between A$9.6m to A$80m. Custom kitchens designed by Christopher Peacock are encased in wood and fluted glass cabinetry with 2-inch-thick Calacatta marble on the kitchen islands. Primary baths feature slabs of marble behind a freestanding tub, radiant floor heating, and a glass-enclosed rain shower with a built-in bench. Residents also enjoy an indoor pool, fitness centre, wine lockers, and other high-end amenities. And paparazzi-averse residents can enter the building through a private garage, another huge perk.Top 10 movies of 2024: In a time of scoundrels, ‘Brutalist,’ ‘Challengers’ and the movie about the exotic dancer

MLB shifts six 2025 Rays games to avoid weather issuesPro Picks is a weekly column where AP Pro Football Writer Rob Maaddi shares his picks for upcoming games. For all previous Pro Picks, head here . A potential Super Bowl preview and the battle for Pennsylvania bragging rights highlight the NFL’s Week 15 schedule. The NFC-leading Detroit Lions (12-1) put their 11-game winning streak on the line when they host the AFC East champion Buffalo Bills (10-3) on Sunday. Intrastate and interconference rivals meet when the Pittsburgh Steelers (10-3) visit the Philadelphia Eagles (11-2). Those two games feature four of the league’s six teams with double-digit wins through 14 weeks. Pro Picks selects a full slate of games as the NFL has completed the bye portion of its schedule for the remainder of the regular season. Line: Chargers minus 3 The banged-up Buccaneers beat three last-place teams in a row to move into first place in the NFC South. They’re going to need to rely on Baker Mayfield and the offense with several injuries to key players on defense. But Mayfield has to protect the ball better. Justin Herbert and the Chargers came close against Kansas City, but lost another game by three points or fewer. Los Angeles is giving up a league-low 15.9 points per game. BEST BET: CHARGERS: 23-17 Line: Lions minus 1 1/2 Josh Allen threw three touchdown passes and ran for three scores and the Bills still lost last week, a big blow to their hopes of securing the AFC’s No. 1 seed. The Lions can’t afford to lose because the Vikings and Eagles are right behind them in the race for the NFC’s top spot. Three of Detroit’s past five wins have been by three points. The Lions have a depleted defense that could be exploited by Allen. UPSET SPECIAL: BILLS: 30-27 Line: 49ers minus 2 1/2 The jumbled NFC West is still up for grabs, but the 49ers have no margin for error on Thursday night. With a banged-up backfield, Brock Purdy has stepped up. Now, Deebo Samuel needs to get going. The inconsistent Rams are coming off an impressive win over the Bills. They’re 6-1 straight up in the past seven division games and are 5-2 against the spread in the past seven games this season. The Niners are 4-10 ATS in their past 14 home games. 49ERS: 24-20 Line: Chiefs minus 4 Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs keep winning games in the final minute. They are 0-7 against the spread in the past seven games overall. Kansas City is the superior team, but the Browns have played better than their record. Jameis Winston has made them a formidable opponent. This could be the week the Chiefs don’t have to sweat it out, though. CHIEFS: 24-18 Line: Bengals minus 5 Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase are playing great football. It’s too bad they won’t be playing important games in January. The Titans have struggled to score points, but their defense often keeps things close. It helps Tennessee that Cincinnati is coming off a short week after a road win Monday night in Dallas. BENGALS: 24-16 Line: Commanders minus 7 1/2 Jayden Daniels and the offense got back on track before taking a bye. The Commanders are holding onto the final wild-card spot and can’t overlook the Saints with tough games upcoming. The Saints are clinging to slim playoff hopes and Derek Carr is hurt again. COMMANDERS: 23-17 Line: Ravens minus 15 The Ravens are coming off a bye after losing to Philadelphia and Justin Tucker’s kicking is one of the team’s biggest areas of concern. It won’t come down to a field goal against the woeful Giants, who turn back to Tommy DeVito. RAVENS: 33-13 Line: Panthers minus 2 1/2 Bryce Young nearly led the Panthers to an upset of the Eagles if not for a dropped pass. Carolina came close against the Chiefs and Buccaneers, too. Now, they’re favorites against the Cowboys, whose slim playoff hopes took a big hit with a loss to the Bengals. The Panthers look ready to close to the deal. PANTHERS: 22-20 Line: Jets minus 3 1/2 Aaron Rodgers and the Jets are favorites in a matchup of two teams that have failed miserably to live up to high expectations. Mac Jones makes another start for the injured Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars seek their first two-game winning streak of the season. JETS: 23-16 Line: Texans minus 3 Tua Tagovailoa has been outstanding since returning from a concussion and the Dolphins have to keep winning to stay in playoff contention. The Texans are coming off a much-needed bye hoping key players got healthy. Giving the ball to Joe Mixon has helped Houston’s offense get going with the offensive line having issues protecting C.J. Stroud. TEXANS: 24-23 Line: Broncos minus 3 1/2 Bo Nix and the Broncos have a three-game winning streak that’s put them in position to earn a wild-card berth. The Colts need a victory to have any playoff shot. Both teams had an extra week to prepare after a bye. Denver is 6-0 ATS as a favorite this season and an NFL-best 10-3 ATS overall this season. BRONCOS: 24-18 Line: Eagles minus 5 There’s drama in Philly despite nine straight wins. Everything will be fine if Jalen Hurts throws a few more passes to A.J. Brown this week and the passing game steps up. The Steelers are No. 4 against the run so Saquon Barkley’s quest to break Eric Dickerson’s single-season rushing record could hit a detour. But Pittsburgh is 17th vs. the pass so there’s an opportunity for Hurts and Brown to get in sync. Russell Wilson is 6-1 since taking over as the starter, but the Steelers have a tough stretch coming against the Eagles, Ravens and Chiefs. EAGLES: 22-20 Line: Cardinals minus 6 1/2 A three-game losing streak has knocked the Cardinals out of a playoff position. The lowly Patriots should be a welcome opponent for Kyler Murray and Co. New England has kept it close in several games, going 2-5 in one-score games. CARDINALS: 24-16 Line: Packers minus 3 The streaky Seahawks have won four straight to take over first place in the NFC West after losing four of five. Zach Charbonnet had a career game last week to balance an offense that relies on Geno Smith’s arm. The good news for the Packers is they’re playing a non-division opponent. Green Bay is 1-3 against the NFC North and 8-1 vs. everyone else. This could be a potential playoff preview because the Packers are going to go the wild-card route. PACKERS: 27-20 Line: Vikings minus 6 1/2 Sam Darnold is having an excellent season and the Vikings have won six in a row to stay hot on Detroit’s trail in the NFC North and for the No. 1 seed. The Bears fired their coach after three losses by a field goal or less. Then they were blown out at home by the 49ers and are 0-6 on the road. VIKINGS: 26-16 Line: Falcons minus 4 1/2 Kirk Cousins is struggling and the Falcons have lost four in a row to fall behind the Buccaneers in the NFC South. But the schedule gets easier with three of the final four games against teams that are 7-22. The Raiders should be playing for the No. 1 pick in the draft. FALCONS: 26-19 Last week: Straight up: 9-4. Against spread: 6-6-1. Overall: Straight up: 143-75. Against spread: 111-94-3. Prime-time: Straight up: 34-12. Against spread: 24-21-1. Best Bet: Straight up: 9-5. Against spread: 8-6. Upset Special: Straight up: 7-7. Against spread: 7-7. AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/nfl
By Michelle Marchante, Miami Herald (TNS) MIAMI — As her students finished their online exam, Arlet Lara got up to make a cafe con leche . Her 16-year-old son found her on the kitchen floor. First, he called Dad in a panic. Then 911. “I had a stroke and my life made a 180-degree turn,” Lara told the Miami Herald, recalling the medical scare she experienced in May 2020 in the early months of the COVID pandemic. “The stroke affected my left side of the body,” the North Miami woman and former high school math teacher said. Lara, an avid runner and gym goer, couldn’t even walk. “It was hard,” the 50-year-old mom said. After years of rehabilitation therapy and a foot surgery, Lara can walk again. But she still struggles with moving. This summer, she became the first patient in South Florida to get an implant of a new and only FDA-approved nerve stimulation device designed to help ischemic stroke survivors regain movement in their arms and hands. This first procedure was at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. Lara’s rehab was at at the Christine E. Lynn Rehabilitation Center for The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, part of a partnership between Jackson Health System and UHealth. Every year, thousands in the United States have a stroke , with one occurring every 40 seconds, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The majority of strokes are ischemic, often caused by blood clots that obstruct blood flow to the brain. For survivors, most of whom are left with some level of disability, the Vivistim Paired VNS System, the device implanted in Lara’s chest, could be a game changer in recovery, said Dr. Robert Starke, a UHealth neurosurgeon and interventional neuroradiologist. He also serves as co-director of endovascular neurosurgery at Jackson Memorial Hospital, part of Miami-Dade’s public hospital system. What to know about the stroke device The Vivistim Paired VNS System is a small pacemaker-like device implanted in the upper chest and neck area. Patients can go home the same day. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the stroke rehabilitation system in 2021 to be used alongside post-ischemic stroke rehabilitation therapy to treat moderate to severe mobility issues in hands and arms. Lara’s occupational therapist can activate the device during rehabilitation sessions to electrically stimulate the vagus nerve, which runs from the brain down to the abdomen and regulates various parts of the body’s nervous system. The electrical stimulation rewires the brain to improve a stroke survivor’s ability to move their arms and hands. How it worked on the first Jackson patient Lara also has a magnet she can use to activate the device when she wants to practice at home. Her therapy consists of repetitive tasks, including coloring, pinching cubes and grabbing and releasing cylindrical shapes. After several weeks of rehabilitation therapy with the device, Lara has seen improvement. “Little by little, I’m noticing that my hand is getting stronger. I am already able to brush my teeth with the left hand,” she told the Miami Herald in September. Since then, Lara has finished the initial six-week Vivitism therapy program, and is continuing to use the device in her rehabilitation therapy. She continues to improve and can now eat better with her left hand and can brush her hair with less difficulty, according to her occupational therapist, Neil Batungbakal. Lara learned about the device through an online group for stroke survivors and contacted the company to inquire. She then connected them with her Jackson medical team. Now a year later, the device is available to Jackson patients. So far, four patients have received the implant at Jackson. Starke sees the device as an opportunity to help bring survivors one step closer to regaining full mobility. Strokes are a leading cause of disability worldwide. While most stroke survivors can usually recover some function through treatment and rehabilitation, they tend to hit a “major plateau” after the first six months of recovery, he said. Vivistim, when paired with rehabilitation therapy, could change that. Jackson Health said results of a clinical trial published in the peer-reviewed medical journal The Lancet in 2021 showed that the device, “when paired with high-repetition, task-specific occupational or physical therapy, helps generate two to three times more hand and arm function for stroke survivors than rehabilitation therapy alone.” The device has even shown to benefit patients 20 years from their original stroke, according to Starke. “So now a lot of these patients that had strokes 10-15 years ago that thought that they would never be able to use their arm in any sort of real functional way are now able to have a real meaningful function, which is pretty tremendous,” Starke said. More about the device Vivistim’s vagus-nerve stimulation technology was developed by researchers at the University of Texas at Dallas’ Texas Biomedical Device Center and is being sold commercially by Austin-based MicroTransponder, a company started by university graduates. Similar devices are used to treat epilepsy and depression . For Lara, the device is a new tool to help her recovery journey. “Everything becomes a challenge so we are working with small things every day because I want to get back as many functions as possible,” Lara said. Patients interested in Vivistim should speak with their doctor to check their eligibility. The FDA said patients should make sure to discuss any prior medical history, including concurrent forms of brain stimulation, current diathermy treatment, previous brain surgery, depression, respiratory diseases and disorders such as asthma, and cardiac abnormalities. “Adverse events included but were not limited to dysphonia (difficulty speaking), bruising, falling, general hoarseness, general pain, hoarseness after surgery, low mood, muscle pain, fracture, headache, rash, dizziness, throat irritation, urinary tract infection and fatigue,” the FDA said. MicroTransponder says the device is “covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance with prior authorization on a case-by-case basis.” To learn more about the device, visit vivistim.com. ©2024 Miami Herald. Prince William's royal equerry is stepping down following four years of serviceA judge on Monday rejected a request to block a San Jose State women’s volleyball team member from playing in a conference tournament on grounds that she is transgender. Monday’s ruling by U.S. Magistrate Judge S. Kato Crews in Denver will allow the player, who has played all season, to continue competing in the Mountain West Conference women’s championship scheduled for later this week in Las Vegas. The ruling comes after a lawsuit was filed by nine current players who are suing the Mountain West Conference to challenge the league’s policies for allowing transgender players to participate. The players argued that letting her compete was a safety risk and unfair. While some media have reported those and other details, neither San Jose State nor the forfeiting teams have confirmed the school has a trans women’s volleyball player. The Associated Press is withholding the player’s name because she has not publicly commented on her gender identity. School officials also have declined an interview request with the player. Judge Crews referred to the athlete as an “alleged transgender” player in his ruling and noted that no defendant disputed that San Jose State rosters a transgender woman volleyball player. He said the players who filed the complaint could have sought relief much earlier, noting that the individual universities had acknowledged that not playing their games against San Jose State this season would result in a forfeit in league standings. He also said injunctions are meant to preserve the status quo. The conference policy regarding forfeiting for refusing to play against a team with a transgender player had been in effect since 2022 and the San Jose State player has been on the roster since 2022 – making that the status quo. The player competed at the college level three previous seasons, including two for San Jose State, drawing little attention. This season’s awareness of her identity led to an uproar among some players, pundits, parents and politicians in a political campaign year. The tournament starts Wednesday and continues Friday and Saturday. San Jose State is seeded second. The judge's order maintains the seedings and pairings for the tournament. Several teams refused to play against San Jose State during the season, earning losses in the official standings. Boise State and Wyoming each had two forfeits while Utah State and Nevada both had one. Southern Utah, a member of the Western Athletic Conference, was first to cancel against San Jose State this year. Nevada’s players stated they “refuse to participate in any match that advances injustice against female athletes,” without providing further details. Crews served as a magistrate judge in Colorado’s U.S. District Court for more than five years before President Joe Biden appointed him to serve as a federal judge in January of this year. Gruver reported from Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Hanson from Helena, Montana.

Fugitive dog gains fame in New Orleans eluding dart guns and netsHennessy Advisors, Inc. Reports 46% Increase in Annual Earnings Per ShareRight-wing nutjob and Rep. Lauren Boebert has joined the service Cameo, meaning for the low, low price of $250, you can get a video message from the Colorado Republican now infamous for getting frisky at a performance of "Beetlejuice" the musical . "Whether it’s a milestone birthday, an anniversary, or a long-awaited reunion, make it unforgettable with a one-of-a-kind Cameo video from Lauren Boebert," says her Cameo page . "You’ll have the chance to customize your request for Lauren Boebert, like asking them to mention inside jokes, share words of wisdom, or work in their signature catchphrases. Don’t be afraid to get creative with your request, especially for celebrations like weddings, retirements, or bachelor and bachelorette parties that call for a good laugh. No matter the occasion, the video will be yours to keep—share the fun and relive the moment for years to come." It’s unclear how long Boebert’s Cameo career will last, though, since it may be illegal for her to earn income from the site while serving in Congress. “Under House Rules, Members, as well as House officers and employees who are paid above the ‘senior staff’ rate (for 2008, anyone paid at or above $114, 468), are prohibited from receiving any honoraria. An honorarium, as defined in the rules, is ‘a payment of money or a thing of value for an appearance, speech, or article,’” according to the House Ethics Committee. However, if Boebert is booted from the platform, there are some other equally horrible people you can purchase a video message from, if that kind of thing floats your boat. Fresh off his resignation from Congress and after his dreams of being attorney general were dashed , Matt Gaetz joined the website . His profile photo on the platform is the same photo his wife, Ginger Gaetz, posted to X after Gaetz withdrew from being considered for Donald Trump’s attorney general, with the caption “Unemployment never looked so good.” Gaetz has already posted a handful of super-cringe videos, which cost upward of $500 a pop, including a pep talk for a guy named "Toby" and a congrats on making partner at a law firm to a woman named "Tarah." Former Rep. George Santos of New York, who was expelled from Congress and later pleaded guilty to wire fraud and identity theft, has earned a killing from Cameo , funds that will no doubt help pay his legal fees. Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani is also on Cameo , where for the low price of $19.99, you can send a message to the guy who helped run Trump’s failed attempt to remain in power after losing the 2020 election. Some of the videos Giuliani posted are mega cringe, including this one below where he recites the “I’m a Little Tea Pot” nursery rhyme in what appears to be an empty baseball stadium. x This video of Rudy Giuliani humiliating himself for a few hundred bucks on Cameo is the culmination of such a profound public debasement. The attention economy has revealed so many political figures to just be attention-seeking grifters. (h/t @KFILE ) pic.twitter.com/aro07ho8rd — Brian Klaas (@brianklaas) March 17, 2023 Giuliani, who has been on the platform for years now, was disbarred in July and can no longer perform paid legal services. That’s a problem for him since in his effort to steal the election for Trump, Giuliani defamed two poll workers in Georgia and now owes them nearly $150 million . He better get cranking on those Cameos: It would take only 7,503,752 people sending him Cameo messages to pay off that legal judgement. Also on Cameo is Trump ally Roger Stone, who was found guilty of obstruction of justice and witness tampering stemming from the government’s probe into Russian interference in Trump’s 2016 election. Trump corruptly commuted Stone’s sentence before he left office kicking and screaming in 2021. Apparently, people pay more than $100 a pop asking Stone “to poke fun at their liberal friends and family,” according to his Cameo page. File under: horrible people paying horrible people to do horrible things. If you want a real blast from the past, you can pay former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin $199 to craft you or your loved ones a video message. If budget is a concern, a video from former Utah Congressman turned Fox News host Jason Chaffetz cost just $35. What a steal! That’s even cheaper than fellow Fox News personality Tomi Lahren , who charges $95 each for a Cameo video. And if Never Trumpers are your cup of tea, you can purchase videos from short-lived Trump press secretary Anthony Scaramucci or former Trump fixer Michael Cohen . Both men, who now loathe Trump, are on the platform.

Amazon and Starbucks workers are on strike. Trump might have something to do with it Amazon delivery drivers and Starbucks baristas are on strike in a handful of U.S. cities as they seek to exert pressure on the two major companies to recognize them as unionized employees or to meet demands for an inaugural labor contract. Strikes during busy periods like the holidays can help unions exercise leverage during negotiations or garner support from sympathetic consumers. One expert says he thinks workers at both companies are “desperate” to make progress before President-elect Donald Trump can appoint a Republican majority to the National Labor Relations Board. Workers at Starbucks, Amazon and some other prominent consumer brands are fighting for their first contracts after several locations voted to unionize. Bluesky finds with growth comes growing pains — and bots Bluesky has seen its user base soar since the U.S. presidential election, boosted by people seeking refuge from Elon Musk’s X, or wanting an alternative to Meta’s Threads and its algorithms. The platform grew out of the company then known as Twitter and was eventually intended to replace it. While this is still very much a pie in the sky, Bluesky’s growth trajectory could make it a serious competitor to other social platforms. With growth, though, comes growing pains. It’s not just human users who’ve been flocking to Bluesky but also bots, including those designed to create partisan division or direct users to junk websites. Farmers are still reeling months after Hurricane Helene ravaged crops across the South LYONS, Ga. (AP) — Farmers in Georgia are still reeling more than two months after Hurricane Helene blew away cotton, destroyed ripened squash and cucumbers and uprooted pecan trees and timber. Agribusinesses in other Southern states saw costly damage as well. The University of Georgia estimates the September storm inflicted $5.5 billion in direct losses and indirect costs in Georgia alone. In rural Toombs County, Chris Hopkins just finished harvesting his ravaged cotton crop and figures he lost half of it, costing him about $430,000. Poultry grower Jeffrey Pridgen in Georgia's Coffee County had four of his 12 chicken houses destroyed and others badly damaged. Farmers say more government disaster assistance is needed. Ex-OpenAI engineer who raised legal concerns about the technology he helped build has died Suchir Balaji, a former OpenAI engineer and whistleblower who helped train the artificial intelligence systems behind ChatGPT and later said he believed those practices violated copyright law, has died, according to his parents and San Francisco officials. He was 26. He was well-regarded by colleagues at the San Francisco company, where a co-founder this week called him one of OpenAI’s strongest contributors who was essential to developing some of its products. But he grew disillusioned with the company and told The Associated Press this fall he would “try to testify” in copyright infringement cases against it. Federal Reserve's preferred inflation gauge shows price pressures eased last month WASHINGTON (AP) — An inflation gauge that is closely watched by the Federal Reserve barely rose last month in a sign that price pressures cooled after two months of sharp gains. Prices rose just 0.1% from October to November. Excluding the volatile food and energy categories, prices also ticked up just 0.1%, after two months of outsize 0.3% gains. The milder inflation figures arrived two days after Federal Reserve officials, led by Chair Jerome Powell, rocked financial markets by revealing that they now expect to cut their key interest rate just two times in 2025, down from four in their previous estimate. Albania to close TikTok for a year blaming it for promoting violence among children TIRANA, Albania (AP) — Albania’s prime minister says the government will shut down video service TikTok for one year, blaming it for inciting violence and bullying, especially among children. Albanian authorities held 1,300 meetings with teachers and parents following the stabbing death of a teenager in mid-November by another teenager following a quarrel that started on TikTok. Prime Minister Edi Rama, speaking at a meeting with teachers and parents, said TikTok “would be fully closed for all. ... There will be no TikTok in the Republic of Albania.” Rama says the ban will begin sometime next year. Albanian children comprise the largest group of TikTok users in the country, according to domestic researchers. Stock market today: Wall Street rises to turn a dismal week into just a bad one NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks rose to turn what would have been one of the market’s worst weeks of the year into just a pretty bad one. The S&P 500 rallied 1.1% Friday to shave its loss for the week down to 2%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped nearly 500 points, and the Nasdaq composite gained 1%. A report said a measure of inflation the Federal Reserve likes to use was slightly lower last month than expected. It’s an encouraging signal after the Fed shocked markets Wednesday by saying worries about inflation could keep it from cutting interest rates in 2025 as much as earlier thought. Starbucks workers begin strikes that could spread to hundreds of US stores by Christmas Eve Workers at U.S. Starbucks stores have begun a five-day strike to protest a lack of progress in contract negotiations with the company. The strikes began in Los Angeles, Chicago and Seattle and could spread to hundreds of stores across the country by Christmas Eve. Workers at 535 of the 10,000 company-owned Starbucks stores in the U.S. have voted to unionize. The Starbucks Workers United union accuses the Seattle-based coffeehouse chain of failing to honor a commitment made in February to reach a labor agreement this year. Starbucks says the union prematurely left the bargaining table this week. It said Friday there's been no significant impact to store operations. It's beginning to look like another record for holiday travel Drivers and airline passengers without reindeer and sleighs better make a dash for it: it’s beginning to look like another record for holiday travel in the U.S. The auto club AAA predicts that more than 119 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home between Saturday and New Year’s Day. The two weekends on either side of Christmas are tempting a lot of people to head out earlier. U.S. airlines expect to have their busiest days to be Friday and Sunday this week and next Thursday, Friday and Sunday. A government shutdown that could start as soon as Saturday was not expected to immediately affect flights and airport operations. Amazon workers are striking at multiple facilities. Here's what you should know Amazon workers affiliated with the Teamsters union are on strike for a second day at seven of the company’s delivery hubs just days before Christmas. At midnight on Saturday, the Teamsters say workers at a prominent unionized warehouse in New York will also join. The union has not indicated how many employees were participating in the walkout or when it will end. The Teamsters say the workers were continuing their strike on Friday after Amazon ignored a Sunday deadline the union had set for contract negotiations. The company says it doesn’t expect the strikes taking place in Southern California, San Francisco, New York City, Atlanta, and Skokie, Illinois, to impact holiday shipments.

Van Nistelrooy returned to Old Trafford as Erik ten Hag’s assistant in the summer and had a four-game interim spell in charge following his compatriot’s sacking in October. He left the club in the wake of Ruben Amorim’s appointment but was only out of work for two weeks after being appointed Leicester’s new manager on a deal until 2027. The 48-year-old had a glittering playing career with United and was disappointed his return had to end so soon. “The moment I took over the interim job what I said was I’m here to help United and to stay to help United, and I meant it,” he said. “So I was disappointed, yeah, very much so, and it hurt I had to leave. “The only job I would take as an assistant was at United because of the bond that I have with the people in the club and the fans. “But in the end I got my head around it because I also understand the new manager. I’m in football long enough, and I’ve managed myself, that you can think of a situation, me being there, I understand. “I spoke to Ruben about it, fair enough to him, the conversation was grateful, man to man, person to person, manager to manager, and that helped a lot to move on and straightaway get into talks with new possibilities which of course lifted my spirits.” The Dutchman takes on a difficult job at the King Power Stadium as he is tasked with keeping Leicester in the Premier League. He inherits an influential dressing room, which has seen a number of managers come and go over the last few years. It’s mutual respect. I also mentioned to the players yesterday that I looked at the squad and started to make phone calls about players, because in football everyone knows everyone,” he said. “With two or three phone calls you hear stories about 20 players and for me it was important that you hear there are good characters there. That’s important, that there are good people there. “I look at the players how they play. I obviously don’t know them but I got general information and the individuals that they are a good bunch of people. That was important for me to get in.”

During 2024 they helped almost 7000 individuals by providing them with food parcels and other essential items. The foodbank started up in 2013 and now has 130 volunteers working to ensure that families and individuals who use the service don’t go without. The registered Scottish charity’s base is at Rutherglen Exchange Shopping Centre, but it distributes to people in the community four times a week from three different locations. From the start of 2024 they have given out 6705 parcels, of those 4815 were to individual adults and another 1890 were to families with children. Veronica Gunn, only took up the position of manager of Rutherglen and Cambuslang Foodbank just weeks before Christmas. She said: “I’ve only been here a full two weeks and it’s a career change for me away from corporate work. "Previously, I’d worked with the Wise Group and had been sending staff out because people were cold and had no heating, then we’d find out they had no food as well, so food banks often came up and I was always interested in their work. I just wanted to do something that helps in the community. “We take referrals from other agencies but we would never turn anyone away without food, who’s really in need. We would give them a bag for over night and then direct them to get a referral. “Sometimes you can get people turning up who have never been in that position before and they just don’t know what to do. It’s not something we encourage but we wouldn’t turn them away and they walk away with something, normally an overnight bag.” Donations are declining while the number of people needing to use the service is heading in the other direction. Veronica is grateful to the general public and the volunteers who help ensure they can continue to help the rising number of people who struggle to make ends meet, for whatever reason. She added: “People are chapping the door with donations all the time when I’m in Rutherglen, I could be an individual with a bag or a business that’s been to Costco. “It’s incredible to see how it all works and how hard the volunteers work. “We’ve got 130 volunteers who help with Rutherglen, Cambuslang and Whitlawburn, we have people who do social media and write thank yous to donors, we have drivers – and we need more of them. It can be quite a heavy job. “We are seeded by the Trussell Trust, they support us and are always there to help us if needed. We’d also like to give a big shout out to the big Tesco in Dalmarnock and the one in Burnside, and Morrisons in Cambuslang. “We’ve just had a big food drive with Tesco in Burnside and it went really well.” More information on the foodbank is available via their website at: https://rutherglencambuslang.foodbank.org.uk *Don't miss the latest headlines from around Lanarkshire. Taylor Swift reportedly “feels horrible” for her close friend Blake Lively after the actress filed a legal complaint last week accusing her It Ends With Us co-star Justin Baldoni of sexual harassment and orchestrating a smear campaign against her. Sources tell The Daily Mail that the “Shake it Off” singer was “startled” by the revelations contained in Lively’s lawsuit. “Taylor is startled by the revelations surrounding the Blake Lively takedown and she is encouraging Blake to get to the bottom of it,” the source said. “She supports Blake and feels horrible that she had to go through all of this.” Lively and Swift have been close friends for years, and the pop star is even the godmother to her three daughters James, Inez, and Betty. Lively’s children, whom she welcomed with husband Ryan Reynolds , are also named in one of Swift’s tracks “Betty” off her 2020 album Folklore . In her complaint, Lively accused Baldoni of sexual harassment and his public relations team for engineering a smear campaign against her over the summer. Baldoni’s attorney, Bryan Freedman, called the claims “outrageous” and told the Associated Press in a statement, “These claims are completely false, outrageous and intentionally salacious with an intent to publicly hurt and rehash a narrative in the media.” Universal Pictures put the speculation to rest on Monday, announcing that director Christopher Nolan’s next film will be The Odyssey , based on Homer’s epic poem and a central story of Greek mythology. “Christopher Nolan’s next film ‘The Odyssey’ is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology,” the studio posted on X. “The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026.” No specific casting has been announced, but the film is expected to star real-life couple and former Spider-Man co-stars Tom Holland and Zendaya along with Matt Damon ( Oppenheimer ), Anne Hathaway ( Interstellar ), Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, and Charlize Theron. As recently as last week, Holland was being coy about the details of the film, saying in a podcast interview , “To be perfectly honest, I don’t really know what it’s about. I’m super excited, but it’s been pretty quiet about the project. I met with [Nolan] and it was awesome. He kind of loosely pitched what it is, and I’m sure when he’s ready he’ll announce what it’s about.” Scouted selects products independently. Hawaii’s Kīlauea volcano, located in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, began erupting Monday. Lava fountains emitted from the volcano, which is one of the most active ones in the world. The volcano erupted last in September and June. The United States Geographic Survey posted videos of the eruption cascading along the caldera floor. According to the AP, the area where the eruption is has been closed off to the public since 2007 due to many hazards. Some of the dangers include sulfur dioxide and other gases from the volcanoes, possible explosions and uneven ground surfaces like cracks and cliffs. “Kīlauea volcano has been intermittently erupting,” the USGS said. “This is an exciting time on Kīlauea because several eruptions have occurred at the summit following the 2018 summit collapse.” According to the USGS, past eruptions in the last several years from Kīlauea have lasted from around two weeks to over a year. Before that, his child acting career got off to an unfortunate start, he revealed in a new episode of the Smartless podcast , when he was cast as a learning disabled kid in a commercial at 6-years-old. “The concept was I’m standing in front of a chalkboard with chalk in my hand and I don’t know how to solve the easy thing in front of me,” Culkin recalled. “And the kids in the class are supposed to be calling me a dummy and stupid, all that.” But when the director, who he declined to name, called action, he started shouting at the young Culkin, “‘Dummy. Idiot. Stupid.’” The unusual approach led the actor to think to himself, “I get it. I’m 6. Stand here and look sad. I’m not f---ing method. I’m 6. What’s wrong with you?” As a child, Culkin went on to star in films like Only the Lonely and Father of the Bride. More recently, he won an Emmy and a Golden Globe Award for his portrayal of Roman Roy on HBO’s Succession and is a frontrunner for the Best Supporting Actor trophy at the upcoming Academy Awards for his role in the film A Real Pain . Every winter, my skin gets chapped, irritated, and downright pissed at me, thanks to the shorter days, colder temperatures, layers of clothes, heaters on full-blast everywhere, and lack of moisture in the air. Usually, I don’t feel the need to reach for a designated ‘night cream’ since the regular moisturizer that I use during the day works just fine, but during the past few weeks, my skin has been screaming for a little extra TLC and hydration. When it comes to any category of skincare , I always look for clinically-proven and medical-grade formulas, if possible, including the most basic creams and moisturizers. While there are a few Korean beauty (K-beauty to the initiated) products I’ve loved for years, the holy grail snail mucin serum I once used religiously has disappeared from my daily routine, as has my former collection of sheet and lip masks. On my quest for a thirst-quenching night cream with added anti-aging benefits, I discovered the luxury medical-grade skincare line, Dr. Rossi DERM MD . The brand’s formulas borrow wisdom from Korean skincare traditions and each of the formulas is powered by Dr. Rossi’s proprietary Bio-Theriac Complex , combining biomimetic sea anemone peptides, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid in an optimized ratio to combat premature aging caused by skin sensitization. Its bestselling, skin-repairing Night Synthesis Cream sounded like exactly what my skin needed (it also doesn’t hurt that the enviably ageless Martha Stewart is reportedly a fan of the concentrated cream.) Without being overly heavy or greasy—two skincare formula characteristics that are absolute dealbreakers as far as I’m concerned—the night cream is still rich, emollient, and brimming with science-backed ingredients that not only keep their complexion-enhancing properties but also rejuvenate lackluster skin fast. When I say this cream is dense, I’m really not joking—when you turn the jar upside down, the formula stays put like a Dairy Queen Blizzard turned upside down. Despite its density and viscosity, I’ve been wearing it under makeup during the day, and the formula absorbs quickly enough that there’s no oil slick of residue lingering, which is another requirement of mine. Within just a week of using the cream , the dehydration-induced fine lines around my crow’s feet and under my eyes have diminished significantly. My skin appears firmer, brighter, and more luminous upon waking. Plus, the broken capillaries, redness, and skin peeling (also likely due to my retinoid use) have almost vanished despite the arid climate and rampant seasonal cedar allergies. Coming in at just under $200, this luxury night cream is definitely an investment but one that is well worth it if your skin, like mine, is crying out for reprieve from these drier winter months. A U.S. Navy fighter jet was shot down over the Red Sea on Saturday in an apparent friendly fire incident, authorities have said. Two U.S. Navy pilots ejected safely after it was “mistakenly fired” upon by the USS Gettysburg in a non-specified location, U.S. Central Command said in a statement. One of the pilots sustained minor injuries and authorities said a full investigation is underway. The F/A-18, was operating from the USS Harry S. Truman, when the guided-missile cruiser—part of the Truman carrier strike group—fired during a refueling operation. The incident happened a day after U.S. forces hit Houthi structural targets in Yemen. The rebel group appeared to try and take credit for the incident Sunday, but it has a reputation for false claims. The U.S. has a presence in the area due to the Iran-backed Houthi campaign of targeting ships in the busy waterway. Michael Schumacher, the famed F1 star, is going to be a granddad. The news comes after his daughter, 27-year-old Gina, announced her pregnancy. The sports icon’s daughter was just married three months ago, with her dad speculated to have attended the wedding. Gina made an Instagram post, featuring a photo of pink western items, including a pony, with the caption: “Impatiently awaiting the arrival of our little girl.” She tagged her newly-wedded husband, Iain. Schumacher, 55, has not been seen publicly since a skiing accident in 2013, where he sustained a severe head injury. Known to keep his life private, no mobile phones were allowed at the wedding. Jean Todt, a friend of Schumacher, said in the past that he “is no longer the Michael we knew,” according to The Sun . Beside Gina, Schumacher has a son named Mick, who also races. He commented on his sister’s announcement post, writing: “So excited.” Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos visited Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago last week, according to reports, just the latest in a procession of business elites suddenly seeking face-time with the president-elect. The 60-year-old has previously donated to Democrats including President Joe Biden, former President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, according to Reuters . Sarandos is also married to Nicole Avant, who was Obama’s United States Ambassador to the Bahamas between 2009 and 2011. A dizzying array of high-powered business moguls have tried to curry favor with Trump since his election victory over Vice President Kamala Harris. Last week, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos joined Trump for a dinner at Mar-a-Lago that was also attended by Trump’s outspoken cheerleader and Twitter owner, Elon Musk . Fellow social media mogul Mark Zuckerberg also paid a visit to the president-elect’s Palm Beach club last month, while Apple CEO Tim Cook made his visit earlier in December. Zuckerberg’s Meta donated $1 million to Trump’s inaugural fund after his house call, a move that Amazon is also reportedly considering . Japan’s second and third biggest automakers, behind Toyota, are pairing up to fight back against the rising threat of Chinese dominance in the electric vehicle market. The two companies signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding in March, committing to collaboration on EVs, and on Monday confirmed the plans to fully merge—alongside Nissan-controlled Mitsubishi. But after the press conference in Tokyo, attention shifted to what the overall holding company might be called when the merger is finished, perhaps as early as late January. “Nissonda or Hondissan?” one X user asked , while another added : “Can’t wait to drive a Nishonda.” One person took a different view, saying : “Hondissan this, Nissonda that. No. Nonda. Or, the objectively more evil Nisson.” Scouted selects products independently. If you purchase something from our posts, we may earn a small commission. A Cathay Pacific flight destined for Boston diverted to Japan because of an unruly passenger who allegedly assaulted people during a midair meltdown. Passengers endured a 15-hour delay and a forced stopover at Tokyo Haneda after flight CX812, which originated in Hong Kong , descended into chaos. The disruptive individual was banned from future flights with the airline, Hong Kong’s flag carrier. Reports suggest the person, who was arrested upon touchdown, assaulted others onboard. Passengers initially departed Hong Kong International Airport 7:40 p.m. local time on Saturday, but after the incident, the were loaded onto a new plane, which departed at 10:45 a.m. and reached Boston at 12:26 p.m. Eastern Time Sunday. They were compensated with meal vouchers and lounge access, while the airline also apologized. Hong Kong’s Aviation Security Ordinance has strict penalties for unruly behavior, including fines of up to around $6,500 and imprisonment for up to five years. The governor of Nebraska, Jim Pillen , is facing Christmas in hospital after he was bucked off a horse. The Republican state leader, who turns 69 next week, was out riding with family members when the horse, which was described as new, sent him flying. His office said he “is alert and is in continuous touch with his team,” after the incident Sunday. However, it added that he was expected to remain in hospital “for several days.” This means Pillen could spend Christmas Day in the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, where he was transported “out of an abundance of caution” after initial treatment at Columbus Community Hospital, according to his office. “Gov. Pillen and his family are very appreciative of the thoughts and prayers given to them by Nebraskans and they wish all Nebraskans a very merry Christmas,” his office added in the statement.

Should the U.S. increase immigration levels for highly skilled workers?( MENAFN - IANS) Melbourne, Dec 28 (IANS) Legendary India batter Sunil Gavaskar slammed Rishabh Pant for his ridiculous dismissal in the ongoing Boxing Day Test, saying it was 'a stupid shot' and that the wicketkeeper-batter let his team down when they needed him to bat long. Against Scott Boland in the 56th over, Pant had tried playing a falling ramp shot, but inside-edged the ball onto his stomach. Australia skipper Pat Cummins had placed fielders in the deep in fine leg and third man in case Pant repeated that shot. It did happen that way as on the next ball Pant tried the same shot, but to his horror, this time the top-edge went to Nathan Lyon at deep third man, as the batter was dismissed for 28 off 37 balls, leaving Gavaskar livid. "Stupid, stupid, stupid! You've got two fielders there and you still go for that. You missed the previous shot, and look where you've been caught. That is throwing away your wicket. You cannot say that that's your natural game. I'm sorry. That is not your natural game. That is a stupid shot. That is letting your team down badly. You have to understand the situation as well. He should not be going in that (India's) dressing room, he should be going in the other dressing room," said Gavaskar on ABC Sport. In this series so far, Pant has averaged just 20.66, with his highest score being 37. On Fox Cricket, Australia women's captain Alyssa Healy and former men's player Kerry O'Keeffe lauded Cummins for his spot-on field placing to get Pant out. “You sense that Pant was placed there for such a shot. They also had the two deep (fielders) on the leg side, a fine leg and a backward square anticipating something like that,” O'Keeffe noted. “Obviously Rishabh didn't mean the ball to go to Nathan Lyon, but with two out on the leg side it's a risky shot,” added Alyssa.“Pat was grinning, he knew he had the field right there,” replied O'Keeffe. Meanwhile, Gavaskar suggested for all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy to be promoted up the batting order, citing that the youngster is more responsible and aware of the game situation. Before lunch break came, Reddy showcased his good footwork and proactiveness to be not out on 40. In the series, Reddy has been a revelation with the bat, showcasing maturity and composure on his first tour of Australia. "He should be promoted up the order, because he bats with a great deal of responsibility. He bats with a great deal of awareness of the situation. Awareness of the situation is so important when you're playing Test cricket." The Wolverines have won the last three encounters, but this year's matchup has a far different feel. The No. 2 Buckeyes enter Columbus as 21-point favorites over a 6-5 foe that ranks 128th out of 133 FBS teams in total offense. Michigan watched 13 players get drafted to the NFL since defeating Ohio State last November. Meyer, who defeated Michigan seven straight times as Ohio State's head coach, is still not taking his own Big Ten nemesis lightly. "The minute someone says the Wolverines have bad players, you're out of your mind," Meyer said Monday on The Herd , via On3 . "They got excellent players, like you just said. They’ve had some quarterback issues, but quarterback can get fixed in a game." Meyer doesn't think Ohio State's staff will let its players believe the hype and fall into a trap game. "I guarantee you there's too much respect in that locker room at Ohio State," he continued. "I know the coaching staff ... You just work your tail off and find a way to win this game. So regardless of what the media says, the point spread, it doesn’t matter." Carmen Mandato/Getty Images The real question is: Can Meyer actually name any of those good Michigan players? On Monday's ManningCast, actor Owen Wilson recalled Meyer asking, "How do I know you" during a celebrity flag football game. Mike Vrabel, who coached on Meyer's Ohio State staff in 2012 and 2013, claimed his former boss asked him the same question when they were rival head coaches in the NFL. The Athletic previously claimed that Meyer was unaware of NFL stars such as Aaron Donald and Deebo Samuel while coaching the Jacksonville Jaguars. Meyer later denied not knowing about the three-time Defensive Player of the Year. As Meyer alluded to, Michigan has struggled to maintain a consistent passing game without J.J. McCarthy. Davis Warren has more interceptions (seven) than passing touchdowns (six) than interceptions while averaging 152.0 passing yards per game. Michigan will need a big day from running backs Kalel Mullings and Donovan Edwards. A defense led by Josaiah Stewart and Mason Graham must also come up huge to hand Ohio State another crushing loss this Saturday. Related: Ryan Day Admits That Losing To Michigan Ruins His Life
NoneThe realization came in the form of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) report from November indicating a reacceleration of inflation, as well as a material reacceleration of “core inflation,” which for some reason excludes the things I spend most of my money on, food and energy. While this reality check was somewhat abated a week later when one of the Fed’s now preferred alternative inflation indicators, Personal Inflation Expenditures (PCE) did not reaffirm the November CPI number, the sting of the higher CPI number still hangs in the air. If one were to muse as to why the Fed has so many divergent flavors of inflation tracking, perhaps the best answer is if inflation was a core metric of your job performance, wouldn’t you? Either way, whether its CPI, Core CPI, PCE or Core PCE, PPI, or the GDP Deflator, those of use who live in the real world know inflation is by no means tamed (I just spent $127 on ribeye steaks for Christmas). Cost inflation is both a simple and extremely complicated topic. The simple part of the equation is when the supply of money in an economy increases, prices denominated in this money also tend to rise as more money circulating means each unit of money is worth a little less in terms of purchasing power. In the United States, the most widely used measure of money supply is a metric called M2, and the Fed of course tracks this as well. A glance at the Fed’s M2 chart shows what we would expect based on our lived experience over the past four years. A historically rapid increase in money supply during COVID years, a gentle reduction through 2022 and 2023 as the Fed shifted its policy approach, but surprisingly a then even more subtle but clear increase in M2 starting again mid-2024. With this chart as our guide, the reacceleration of CPI inflation last month should not catch us off guard. So, what causes money supply to rise? This is where the topic gets considerably more complicated, but one straightforward part of the answer to this question is of course, government deficit spending. Regardless of which end of the political spectrum we draw our bias from, it's impossible to argue the Federal government has been running a tight ship over the past few years. Rampant ineptitude, coupled with zero accountability, tends to bust the budget, and with a $1.8 trillion deficit in 2024, “busting the budget” is a woeful understatement. Rather than festering in blame, I say it’s time to look forward. In my opinion we stand at a unique spot in the history of the economic cycle. I believe it will soon become apparent the Fed has no ability to address rising inflation and this realization will come at a very important moment in time politically in the U.S. While by any measure the rest of us would use in real life, the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, aka the Trump tax cuts, have been amazingly productive from a federal revenue perspective. With $4.92 trillion in 2024 federal tax receipts, government funding has never been higher. Tax cuts, however, are not an immediate gratification magic bullet. Smarter tax and regulatory burden tend to work into the economy over time, creating stronger growth and more tax receipts, but present less attractive short-term math when it comes to immediate tax receipts. Based on the rhetoric leaking into the ether, I expect the new Trump administration to cut taxes even more next year. These tax cuts are highly likely to result in lower tax receipts at the front end of the policy period. Maybe the D.O.G.E. will be effective at tightening up federal spending, but it certainly won’t happen quickly. Long story short, federal deficits are highly likely to not go down in the shorter term, and I wouldn’t bet on inflation cooling as well, leaving the Fed in a lurch when it comes to interest rate policy. For the first time, private sector banks as a group met priority sector lending targets including sub-targets for major heads in 2023-24, particularly in agriculture, showed central bank data. Although all bank groups managed to achieve their stipulated overall targets and sub targets, private sector banks did better than public sector counterparts. India's car race: How far EVs went in 2024 Investing in 2025: Six wealth management trends to watch out for For public sector, private and foreign banks, the target is 40% of adjusted net bank credit (ANBC) or credit equivalent of off-balance sheet exposure (CEOBE), whichever is higher, for small finance banks the target is higher at 75%. One of the reasons for the private sector to achieve their priority sector target Is that these banks are now allowed to invest in priority sector lending certificates (PSLCs). These are issued against banks’ priority sector loans under various sub-targets and general categories. Banks use PSLCs to guard against shortfalls. The total trading volume of PSLCs climbed 26% in FY24 , primarily led by PSLC-General. Among the four PSLC categories, the small and marginal farmers category registered the highest trading volume, partly reflecting specialisation by a few banks in lending to this category of borrowers and the inability of other banks to meet sub-targets through direct lending, the RBI said in its report on Trends and Progress of Banking. In the past five years, private sector banks have emerged as major sellers of PSLCs. In FY24, they accounted for 49% of total sales as compared with 21% in the case of PSBs, the RBI said. (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel )By Leah Douglas and Ed White WASHINGTON/REGINA, Saskatchewan (Reuters) -U.S. prices may rise next year for avocados, strawberries and other fresh produce, and consumers could face shortages, if President-elect Donald Trump follows through on plans to slap tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada, agricultural economists and industry executives said. Mexico and Canada are by far the top two suppliers of farm products to the United States, with imports of agricultural goods valued at nearly $86 billion last year, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture and U.S. Customs data. Duties on their food shipments could cause jarring financial and operational ripple effects on U.S. supplies and highlight how reliant the nation has become on its neighbors for feeding its population, economists said. Trump said Monday he would sign an executive order on his first day in office in January that would impose a 25% tariff on all products coming into the United States from Canada and Mexico to curb the flow of illegal drugs and migrants into the U.S. U.S. consumers would feel impacts at grocery stores and restaurants, with items being out of stock, Lance Jungmeyer, president of the Fresh Produce Association of the Americas, said on Tuesday. "We would see fewer items in general in the produce section," Jungmeyer said. "Restaurants would have to reconfigure their menus, maybe putting in less fruits and vegetables or decreasing portions." About two-thirds of all U.S. vegetable imports and half of fruit and nut imports come from Mexico, according to the USDA: nearly 90% of its avocados, as much as 35% of its orange juice, and 20% of its strawberries. Avocado exports to the United States have soared 48% since 2019, according to U.S. trade data, as consumers have increasingly put them in salads and on sandwiches. The U.S. market accounts for about 80% of Mexico's total avocado exports, data by the USDA shows, a trade worth $3 billion last year. "It would generate an inflationary spiral," said Alfredo Ramírez, governor of Michoacan, Mexico's main avocado producing state. "Demand would not fall," he said. "What would increase are costs and prices. This would bring us an increase in inflation and direct repercussions for consumers." Margarita supplies could be hit, too. Imports of beer and tequila together make up nearly a quarter of Mexican imports of agricultural goods into the U.S. last year. U.S. imports of Mexican tequila and mezcal - both used for making cocktails, such as margaritas - totaled $4.66 billion in 2023, up 160% since 2019. The tariffs could also push prices higher for fertilizer imported from Canada at a time when farmers are paying nearly 50% more for fertilizer than in 2020, said Sam Kieffer, vice president of public policy for the American Farm Bureau Federation, a farmer trade group. "Now is not the time to send shock waves through the agricultural economy," Kieffer said. PIGS, CATTLE MIGRATION Trump's plan could also slow the migration of more than 1 million cows exported by Mexico across the border each year, to become part of the U.S. beef supply. U.S. producers have slashed their cattle herds in recent years, pushing up beef prices. They could benefit if tariffs lead to fewer cattle and beef imports, said Bill Bullard, chief executive officer of the Ranchers Cattlemen Action Legal Fund United Stockgrowers of America. Tariffs could also further increase meat prices for U.S. consumers, though Bullard said importers and meat processors may be able to absorb some extra costs. "We look forward to tariffs," he said. "It will help to level the playing field for our domestic producers." To the north, tariffs also could disrupt shipments of beef and dairy cattle and hogs between the U.S. and Canada, and potentially affect producers in both countries. Manitoba alone sends about 3 million piglets each year to producers in Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota and Nebraska, where feed corn can be sourced more cheaply, according to the Canada Pork Council and Manitoba Pork Council Midwestern farmers then raise and fatten up the animals in their feeder barns, before sending them to slaughter - and the pork flows both to buyers in the U.S. and Canada after processing. TRUMP TRADE WARS 2.0 The latest USDA projections show that the U.S. in 2025 will likely run a deficit in agricultural trade of more than $42 billion, driven in part by consumer interest in off-season produce and imported alcohol from Mexico. The threat of tariffs could be a way of attaining leverage over Mexico and Canada in the lead-up to renegotiation of the USMCA trade deal, set to be reviewed in 2026, said Peter Tabor, an attorney and senior policy advisor at Holland & Knight and a former USDA trade official. But implementation of steep tariffs over time could mean the U.S. may be seen as an unreliable trading partner and that importers of U.S. goods would look elsewhere to fill the void, Tabor said. NEW YORK (AP) — Shohei Ohtani won his third Most Valuable Player Award and first in the National League, and Aaron Judge earned his second American League honor on Thursday. Ohtani was a unanimous MVP for the third time, receiving all 30 first-place votes and 420 points in voting by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor was second with 263 points and Arizona second baseman Ketel Marte third with 229. Judge was a unanimous pick for the first time. Kansas City shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. got all 30 second-place votes for 270 points, and Yankees outfielder Juan Soto was third with 21 third-place votes and 229 points. Judge had discussed the MVP award with Philadelphia’s Bryce Harper, the NL winner in 2015 and ’21. “I was telling him, `Man, I’m going to try to catch up to you with these MVPs here, man,’” Judge recalled. “He’d say, hopefully, he could stay a couple ahead of me, which I think he’ll do.” Ohtani was unanimously voted the AL MVP in 2021 and 2023 as a two-way star for the Los Angeles Angels and finished second to Judge in 2022 voting . He didn’t pitch in 2024 following elbow surgery and signed a record $700 million, 10-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers last December. He was the first player to twice become an unanimous MVP. He combined with Atlanta outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. in 2023 for the first year both MVPs were unanimous. Ohtani hit .310, stole 59 bases and led the NL with 54 homers and 130 RBIs exclusively as a designated hitter, becoming the first player with 50 or more homers and 50 or more stolen bases in a season. He helped the Dodgers to the World Series title , playing the final three games with a torn labrum in his left shoulder . Ohtani became the first primary DH to win an MVP. He joined Frank Robinson for Cincinnati in 1961 and Baltimore in 1966 as the only players to win the MVP award in both leagues. Ohtani is the 12th player with three or more MVPs, joining Barry Bonds (seven) and Jimmie Foxx, Joe DiMaggio, Stan Musial, Roy Campanella, Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle, Mike Schmidt, Alex Rodriguez, Albert Pujols and Mike Trout (three each). Balloting was conducted before the postseason. Judge led the major leagues with 58 homers, 144 RBIs and 133 walks while hitting .322. Witt topped the big leagues with a .332 average, hitting 32 homers with 31 stolen bases and 109 RBIs. Soto batted .288 with 41 homers and 109 RBIs. When Judge won his first MVP award in 2022, he received 28 first-place votes while Ohtani got the other two. When Judge won his first MVP award in 2022, he received 28 first-place votes while Ohtani got the other two. He is the Yankees' 22nd MVP winner, four more than any other team. Judge was hitting .207 with six homers and 18 RBIs through April, then batted .352 with 52 homers and 126 RBIs in 127 games. “March and April were not my friend this year.” Judge said. “Just keep putting in the work and things are going to change. You can’t mope. You can’t feel sorry for yourself. Especially in New York, nobody’s going to feel sorry for you. So you just got to go out there and put up the numbers?” Balloting was conducted before the postseason. AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLBTrump's first actions and job data to test US market in January
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — An online spat between factions of Donald Trump's supporters over immigration and the tech industry has thrown internal divisions in his political movement into public display, previewing the fissures and contradictory views his coalition could bring to the White House. The rift laid bare the tensions between the newest flank of Trump's movement — wealthy members of the tech world including billionaire Elon Musk and fellow entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy and their call for more highly skilled workers in their industry — and people in Trump's Make America Great Again base who championed his hardline immigration policies. The debate touched off this week when Laura Loomer , a right-wing provocateur with a history of racist and conspiratorial comments, criticized Trump’s selection of Sriram Krishnan as an adviser on artificial intelligence policy in his coming administration. Krishnan favors the ability to bring more skilled immigrants into the U.S. Loomer declared the stance to be “not America First policy” and said the tech executives who have aligned themselves with Trump were doing so to enrich themselves. Much of the debate played out on the social media network X, which Musk owns. Loomer's comments sparked a back-and-forth with venture capitalist and former PayPal executive David Sacks , whom Trump has tapped to be the “White House A.I. & Crypto Czar." Musk and Ramaswamy, whom Trump has tasked with finding ways to cut the federal government , weighed in, defending the tech industry's need to bring in foreign workers. It bloomed into a larger debate with more figures from the hard-right weighing in about the need to hire U.S. workers, whether values in American culture can produce the best engineers, free speech on the internet, the newfound influence tech figures have in Trump's world and what his political movement stands for. Trump has not yet weighed in on the rift, and his presidential transition team did not respond to a message seeking comment. Musk, the world's richest man who has grown remarkably close to the president-elect , was a central figure in the debate, not only for his stature in Trump's movement but his stance on the tech industry's hiring of foreign workers. Technology companies say H-1B visas for skilled workers, used by software engineers and others in the tech industry, are critical for hard-to-fill positions. But critics have said they undercut U.S. citizens who could take those jobs. Some on the right have called for the program to be eliminated, not expanded. Born in South Africa, Musk was once on an a H-1B visa himself and defended the industry's need to bring in foreign workers. “There is a permanent shortage of excellent engineering talent," he said in a post. “It is the fundamental limiting factor in Silicon Valley.” Trump's own positions over the years have reflected the divide in his movement. His tough immigration policies, including his pledge for a mass deportation, were central to his winning presidential campaign. He has focused on immigrants who come into the U.S. illegally but he has also sought curbs on legal immigration , including family-based visas. As a presidential candidate in 2016, Trump called the H-1B visa program “very bad” and “unfair” for U.S. workers. After he became president, Trump in 2017 issued a “Buy American and Hire American” executive order , which directed Cabinet members to suggest changes to ensure H-1B visas were awarded to the highest-paid or most-skilled applicants to protect American workers. Trump's businesses, however, have hired foreign workers, including waiters and cooks at his Mar-a-Lago club , and his social media company behind his Truth Social app has used the the H-1B program for highly skilled workers. During his 2024 campaign for president, as he made immigration his signature issue, Trump said immigrants in the country illegally are “poisoning the blood of our country" and promised to carry out the largest deportation operation in U.S. history. But in a sharp departure from his usual alarmist message around immigration generally, Trump told a podcast this year that he wants to give automatic green cards to foreign students who graduate from U.S. colleges. “I think you should get automatically, as part of your diploma, a green card to be able to stay in this country," he told the “All-In" podcast with people from the venture capital and technology world. Those comments came on the cusp of Trump's budding alliance with tech industry figures, but he did not make the idea a regular part of his campaign message or detail any plans to pursue such changes.
